A 5-foot- 60 pound man of 72 stood at County Jail last night and heard the news from county policemen that a coroner's jury had exonerated him in the fatal shooting of a assailant in his home. The man freed by the jury's verdict was Charlie L. Page of Pacolet Mills, SC, who, according to testimony at the inquest, fired a .38 caliber bullet into Paul A. Harvey, 46, as the latter advanced on him about 1 o'clock on Friday afternoon, Dec. 6, 1946, in a back room of the Page home. According to statements of investigating officers, Mrs. Harvey, a brother of Mrs. Page, came to the Page home, where he had been boarding for about three weeks, and asked Mrs. Page for $2 with which to pay a taxi fare. When Mrs.Page said she didn't have it, according to officers' testimony, Mr. Harvey asked to borrow the money from Mr. Page. Officers reported that Mr. and Mrs. Page said Mr. Harvey was drunk. Failing to get the money, Mr. Harvey then threatened to "knock their heads off" an affidavit signed by Mrs. Page disclosed, Mr. Page told officers that Mr. Harvey had him "hemmed in" and was advancing on him. He got away, got his pistol and shot his assailant in the left side. Mrs. Page related that Mr. Harvey fell and she got a pillow and put in under his head. She said that Mr. Page the went to get the police and a doctor, and she went to a neighbor's home. Dr. Robert D. Hill, who examined the dead man, reported in a statement to the Coroner A. M. Cash that the cause of death was internal hemorrhage, probably from the cutting of arteries from the heart and that the man probably died four or five minutes after being shot. The jury impaneled by the Coroner Cash found that Mr. Harvey died of gunshot wounds inflicted by Mr. Page in self defense. Officers who investigated the cas were Chief of County Detectives, George Pruitt, Rural Police Chief, J. E. B. Bennett, Rural Policemen, J. A. Patrick and E. J. Thornton, Jailer Jess Murph, and Pacolet Mills, SC Officers Carter and Jones. Mr. Harvey, a son of the late Elithus and Christina Harmon Harvey is survived by his wife, Mrs. Nannie Gibson Harvey; two sister, Mrs Nannie Harvey Page of Pacolet Mills, SC, and Mrs. Mattie Bennett of Winnsboro, NC; one brother, William Harvey of Drayton, SC. The J. F. Floyd Mortuary is in charge of funeral arrangements. He was 46 years of age at demise and interment was in the Pacolet Methodist Church Cemetery.
