Description	:	Farmer and Community Supporter Paul A. Saathoff, 56, of Sterling died at his home on Monday, March 18, 2013 after a long battle with prostate cancer. He was born on October 4, 1956 in Syracuse and attended and graduated from Sterling High School in 1974. Saathoff, 56, of Sterling died at his home on Monday, March 18, 2013 after a long battle with prostate cancer. He was born on October 4, 1956 in Syracuse and attended and graduated from Sterling High School in 1974. He graduated from the University of NE at Lincoln in 1978 with a B.S. degree in agriculture specializing in soil. He married Laurie Fritsch on April 10, 1983 at St. John Lutheran Church of Sterling. He lived and farmed his entire life in the Sterling area. He was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church of Sterling, and was also a member of Sterling School Board for 23 years where he was very politically active working with state Senators advocating for small schools/state aid, the Farm Bureau Board, was an FSA committee member, Southeast NE Co-op Board of Beatrice, So. St. John Cemetery Board, 4-H Council, Sterling Community Association and Sterling Improvement Association. He had been a little league basketball coach in Sterling, the score keeper for the Sterling High School football team and a baseball coach for the Tecumseh American Legion. He enjoyed all sports, playing co-ed softball and working on the farm. Survivors include his wife, Laurie of Sterling; one daughter, Julie of Longview, TX; two sons, Andy and Jake Saathoff both of Sterling; parents, Merlyn and Donna Saathoff of Sterling; one sister, Kathy Heise and husband Ted of Bloomington, IN; one brother, Steve Saathoff and wife Wendy of Centennial, CO; nieces and nephews, Stephanie and Tessa Saathoff, Aaron Robinson and wife Nikki, Rob and Michael Heise, Danny and Michelle Fritsch; parents-in-law, Laverne and Shirley Fritsch of Tecumseh; brother-in-law, Ron and Lisa Fritsch of Tecumseh. He was preceded in death by his son, Lucas "Luke" J. Saathoff; grandparents, Ted and Esther Bartels and William and Erna Saathoff. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, March 22, 2013 at the Sterling High School of Sterling with Pastor Doyle Karst and Pastor Kevin Phillips officiating. Burial will be in the Sterling Cemetery. A family prayer service will be held at 10:00 A.M. in the cafeteria of the school. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the family's choice with Shannon and Erma Hazen in charge. The body will lie in state at the Zink-Fox Funeral Home of Sterling from 12:00 noon Wednesday until 8:00 P.M. Thursday and at the school one hour preceding the services on Friday.
