He was born in Danville, Virginia in 1918, and moved to Raleigh with his mother and sister from Thomasville in 1927. Paul attended Broughton High School and N.C. State College. Read More	RALEIGH - Paul Absalom Hoover Jr., died Wednesday, January 26 at Rex Hospital after a brief illness. He was born in Danville, Virginia in 1918, and moved to Raleigh with his mother and sister from Thomasville in 1927. Paul attended Broughton High School and N.C. State College. After leaving college, he was employed by Peden Steel Company as their first salesman. After five years, he resigned to accept a position with U.S. Steel Corporation in Birmingham, Alabama. Due to the job's heavy travel demands, he returned to Raleigh and joined his father-in-law in his property and casualty insurance agency. He served as president of Durfey- Hoover Insurance Agency for over fifty years. At an early age, Paul became interested in civic affairs and community service. He was deeply involved with the Raleigh Jaycees and later the local Kiwanis Club, serving as president of the Kiwanis Club and was chosen Kiwanis Man of the Year. While serving on the board of the Raleigh Chamber of Commerce, he conducted the first local television show in which he interviewed newcomers to Raleigh. Paul was popular as a speaker for public, as well as many private affairs. Paul served on the boards of the Raleigh Tourist Convention Bureau, the Merchants Bureau, and the Raleigh Little Theater. During his association with the Little Theater, he received its first "Best Actor" award for his performance in "The Hasty Heart." Paul also served on the boards of The Salvation Army and the Wake County Mental Health Association and was chairman of the Wake County Polio Foundation during the era in which the Salk polio vaccine was discovered. He often said his work with the Polio Foundation was the most satisfying experience of his public service. A member of the Board of Trustees at Peace College, he served on the board that founded the Friends of the College concert series at N.C. State University, where he also was a member of the Wolfpack Club for more than 40 years. As part of his professional duties, he became involved in state legislative affairs affecting the insurance industry and frequently testified in the General Assembly. He was twice appointed by the Governor to terms on the State Insurance Study Commission. He was president of the Carolinas Professional Insurance Association and was twice named Agent of the Year. While serving on the national insurance board, he became chairman of the Federal Insurance Committee and often appeared before Senate and House committees. He was named Agent of America in 1972. He served as chairman of the Raleigh Redevelopment Commission during the Smoky Hollow and Southside development projects. He also served three terms on the Raleigh City Council, twice elected by the people and once by the Council to fill a vacancy. He was selected as "Tar Heel" of the Week by the News and Observer in 1972. A member of the First Presbyterian Church of Raleigh for more than 40 years, Paul served as chairman of the Diocanate and on the Board of Ruling Elders. He taught Sunday School in the youth department for 25 years and was president of the Men of the Church. During his time at First Presbyterian, he conducted services at the Raleigh Rescue Mission and at Woman's Prison. Because of his long and devoted service, he was designated Elder Emeritus of the First Presbyterian. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Dorothy Durfey Hoover ; son, Paul Absalom Hoover III and daughter-in-law, Patricia Smith Hoover ; and daughter, Betty Hoover Allen, all of Raleigh; sister, Carolyn Hoover Piland of Hickory, NC ; and grandchildren, Alston Macon Hoover , Paul Absalom Hoover IV, Christopher Blake Allen; Charles Carroll Allen; and Page Hoover Allen of Raleigh. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 29 at 12:00 noon at First Presbyterian Church, 122 S. Salisbury Street, Raleigh, NC . Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery at a later date. Family will receive friends at the home, 528 Marlowe Road. Flowers should be omitted and memorial contributions in memory of Paul Absalom Hoover , Jr. may be sent to First Presbyterian Church, 122 S.
