Reister, 94, a well-known resident of Peshastin and the Wenatchee Valley for the past 82 years, died Saturday, March 23, 2002, at his home. He was born on Jan. 22, 1908, the fifth child of 11 children of the Reverend John F. and his wife Elizabeth (Mees) Reister at Quincy. The family moved frequently as the Reverend Reister was called to start churches throughout the state of Washington and the Midwest. Paul spent his early years at Billings, MT, Odessa and Redfield, SD. As a young child, he was farmed out to relatives and spent summers working in the fields, harvesting wheat and working with farm animals. The growing family arrived in Peshastin in 1920, where the Revered Reister started the German Congregational Church in Dryden and where the family believed they had arrived on the "land of milk and honey." Paul participated in basketball and sometimes academics, graduating from Peshastin High School in 1926. He then enrolled at Washington State College but dropped out because of The Depression. The next several years, he worked in the orchards and rode the rails. He then served in the Civilian Conservation Corps. as the chief cook for the forestry camp at Leavenworth, which enhanced his love for the mountains and he then returned to college, where he graduated from the University of Washington in 1939, with a BS in Forestry. On June 25, 1937, he married Alma Weber at Ritzville and the young couple made their home at the Ski Hut in Leavenworth, where Paul began his career with the USFS, in fire control. It was here in the Leavenworth District, where Paul spent summers manning the lookouts in the high country and hiking into the back country with crews to fight fires. After starting a family, Paul instructed forestry and landscaping at Wiser, ID and worked for Weyerhauser with the nation's first tree farm. His next move was on his father-in-law's ranch near Ritzville. In 1945, Paul returned to the Upper Wenatchee Valley in Dryden, where he bought an apple ranch in partnership with Reg Parsons. Here Paul was truly at home raising apples, pears and the rest of his five children, all within the view of the Cascade high country which he so cherished. He worked at Rocky Reach Dam as a landscaping engineer from 1957 until 1964. After Alma's death in 1959, he worked as a single dad, holding down two careers and raising his children. He married Jane Cogh Timpe on June 26, 1964 at Peshastin and she introduced him to his beloved golf and traveling. After selling the orchard due to poor health in 1967, he was packing foreman in several warehouses, where he was known as a fair and congenial boss. He retired in 1983 at the age of 75. In his later years, he and Jane spent many pleasurable hours golfing and traveling to different places including Europe, Mexico, Alaska and Venezuela. He was instrumental in the remodeling of the Dryden Congregational Church in the 50s and was a dedicated member of the Peshastin United Church of Christ and the Leavenworth Golf Club. Paul's vivid description of the 20s and life in the Valley throughout the years brought laughter and memories of what life used to be. His sense of humor, sense of honesty and love for his family, friends and God, will be missed. Paul was renowned as an excellent gardener and raising his famous corn which he relished eating, bragging about and giving away to family and friends. Paul will be remembered for his courage in keeping his family together after Alma died and dealing with the death of beloved son, Steve in 1991. Even with these tragedies, Paul continued his involvement with his church, his golfing buddies and telling stories to his friends and grandchildren. He is now home at last. He is survived by his wife Jane; three daughters and sons-in-law, Paula and Donald Eismann of Edgewood, Jean Reister of Walla Walla, Julie Reister Keaton and Kim Keaton of Sandpoint, ID; son and daughter-in-law, Zeke and Laurie Reister of Leavenworth; stepson and daughter-in-law, Mike and Donna Timpe of East Wenatchee; two brothers, James Reister of Walla Walla and John Reister of Enterprise, OR; two sisters, Johanna Heydlauff of Puyallup and Betty Cornwell of Mesa, AZ; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service of Commemoration to Celebrate the Life of PAUL C. REISTER, will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon, April 7, 2002, in the Peshastin United Church of Christ with Pastor Bob Jackson, officiating. Private family interment will be in the Peshastin Cemetery. Those who wish may make a memorial in his name to the Central Washington Hospital Hospice Fund, P.O. Box 1887, Wenatchee, WA 98801 or the Peshastin United Church of Christ Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 427, Peshastin, WA 98847. Ward's Funeral Chapel, Leavenworth, is in charge of the arrangements.
