Description	:	Paul Eugene Hartley, 70, of Ottumwa, passed away at 7:10 am September 18, 2012 at Hospice House in Ottumwa. He was born April 11, 1942 in Ottumwa to Joe and Almna Marcille Eakins Hartley. He married the girl next door, Mary Louise Rosenboom, on May 27, 1967. Read More	Paul Eugene Hartley, 70, of Ottumwa, passed away at 7:10 am September 18, 2012 at Hospice House in Ottumwa. He was born April 11, 1942 in Ottumwa to Joe and Almna Marcille Eakins Hartley. He married the girl next door, Mary Louise Rosenboom, on May 27, 1967. Growing up, Paul and Mary were neighbors as young children and often rode bicycles and played in the snow together. After graduating from Ottumwa High School in 1961, Paul enlisted in the Army and spent 3 years stationed in Germany. Upon completion of his term of service, he returned to Ottumwa and became employed by John Deere Ottumwa Works, the only employer he would ever know. He waited to wed Mary until he had his 90 days of service in at John Deere so that he could provide for his wife and the children they would have together. He started his career in the tool cribs. Later, he completed an apprenticeship and became a journeyman Tool and Die Maker. Paul retired from John Deere in 2006 with 40 years of loyal service. He was a proud member of UAW Local #74. Paul enjoyed Ottumwa Camera Club, Poppin' Johnnies Two-Cylinder Club, bowling with his friends, family and co-workers in leagues at both Ottumwa bowling centers, and micro-mini tractor pulling with his son-in-law, David, and his grandson, Jason. Paul was a member of the National Micro-Mini Tractor Puller's Association which has pullers in 10 states. Paul, David and Jason would drive for hours to have the chance of bragging rights at the end of the day over whose semi or 4-wheel drive was either the best, or went up in smoke. Paul was a former member of Heartland Bootscooters and Spoke Folk Bicycle Club. Paul enjoyed most spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Mary; his two daughters, Kimberly(Mark)Frymoyer of Kellogg who blessed him with two grandchildren- Alex, 11 and Leach, 20 months. Paul and Mary would travel with them annually to Decorah for trout fishing trips. Paul would fish with Mark and Alex by day and play cards with Alex in the evenings. Leah, a miracle baby to all of us, was the light of his life and always put a smile on his face. His daguther Tina(David)Rukgaber of Ottumwa, blessed him with three grandchildren-Jason, 10 and twins Karen and Randy, 6. Paul enjoyed taking Jason bowling every Saturday and giving him tips on how to improve his game. Paul and Mary spent countless hours helping out during the early years of raising the twins and rarely turned down an opportunity to spend time with them. Also surviving is a sister JoElla Hagedon of Big Lake, MN; a brother, Roy(Diane)Hartley of Ottumwa and numerous nieces and nephews. Paul always instilled great values in his family. He taught the importance of using common sense, being careful and loving your family by being a great example to us. We will miss him so much! Paul was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services will be 10 am Friday at Ottumwa Baptist Temple with Pastor Randy Miller officiationg. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery with military services conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B.Nelson Post #3 American Legion. Visitation begins at 11 am Thursday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 5-7:30 pm Thursday. Memorials may be made to Hospice House Ottumwa, IA. or Heartland Humane Society, Ottumwa, IA.
