He was 77 years old. Prominent in the Sterling business community for more than four decades, Mr. Appelhans owned two different businesses with his wife, Doris Jean. The couple opened Applehans Produce in the late 1940s, and Appelhans Marine in 1975. Mr. Appelhans also worked as a meat inspector for the State of Colorado from 1967 to 1975. Born March 5, 1918, in Sterling, Mr. Appelhans was the son of Jacob and Eugenia Gotte Appelhans. He grew up in Sterling and graduated from St. Anthony's Catholic Church. He married Eula Mae Christ in 1939; she died in 1943. He married Doris Jean Nicklas Oct. 28, 1943, In Sterling. The couple fanned and ranched in the Atwood-Merino area and near Stoneham, then moved to Sterling where Mr. Applehans worked fo rthe Allis Chalmers implement dealership for three years. The family fmally settled on a farm 2 miles southeast of Sterling in 1949. Mr. Appelhans worked as manager of Sterling Furniture and, at night and on weekends, tended a large vegetable gar den. From the garden sprang Applehans Produce Co., which flourished for 20 years. By 1952, Mr. Appelhans also was sell ing boats to help augment the produce company's income. He accepted a job as state meat inspector in 1967, but the produce company and boat sales continued as well. He left the state's employ in 1975 to open Appelhans Marine full-time. The Applehanses were charter members of the American Historical Society of Germans From Russia. Mr. Appelhans was a life member of Sterling Elks Lodge No. 1336 and St. Anthony's Catholic Church. He enjoyed mu sice, played the saxophone and once led his own band. Mr. Appelhans is survived by his wife, Doris Jean, of Sterling; son Joseph and wife Donna of Sterling; daughters Pamela Ann of Fort Collins and Patty and husband Jerry Weingardt of Sterling; brothers Jacob (Luke) of Winston and Ben of Sterling; sister Margaret Williams of Concorde, Calif.; five grandchildren and six great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by brothers Joe and John and sister Pauline. Visitation will be Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Rosary and vigil will be 7 p.m. Sunday at Tennant Funeral Home. The Rev. Joseph Blanco will conduct the funeral mass at 10 a.m. Monday, and Elks Lodge No. 1336 will conduct graveside rites at Riverside Cemetery afterward. Memorial contributions can be made to Lyman House, Pamela Ann Appelhans of Fort Collins, in care of Tennant Funeral Home.
