Accident Occurs Friday Morning About Quarter Mile from His Home Near Bazile Mills, Causing Instant Death
The community was shocked on Friday afternoon, when it was learned that Paul H. Scheer had been accidently killed by a shot gun, while he was crawling through a fence, about a quarter of a mile from his home northwest of Bazile Mills.
He started out about six o'clock that morning for the cows, taking along a shot gun, which was customary for him to do in running down the roaming coyote.
The supposition is that death resulted shortly after that time. The shot penetrated the bottom of the heart and left through the ribs. When Mr. Scheer did not return, his family started a searching party and found the lifeless body about 1:30 that afternoon.
Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon from the Lutheran church at Bazile Mills, in charge of Rev. H. Stegemann. The church was taxed to capacity of friends of the departed man and the floral tributes were beautiful, which attested the esteem he was held in this community. Rev. Stegemann delivered a very appropriate sermon pertaining to the life of Mr. Scheer. The body was laid to rest beside his departed wife in the Lutheran cemetery.
The whole community joins with The News in extending condolences of a sincere nature to the family of Mr. Scheer in this their hour of deep grief.
Paul H. Scheer was born June 1, 1873 at Ihlow in the Province of Brandenburg, Germany. Here he lived till he was about the age of nine years, when he with his parents, brothers and sisters, immigrated to America. On June 7, 1882 he arrived at Bazile Mills.
He was confirmed at Plainview on April 3, 1887. He grew up to manhood in the Bazile community. On June 10, 1908, he was united in holy wedlock to Emma Mecke. To this union nine children were born, two of whom preceded their father into eternity. Four years ago his wife was summoned by death.
He is survived by three brothers, two sisters, two sons, five daughters, one son-in-law and a host of other relatives and friends. He attained the age of 56 years, 11 months and 5 days. ...The Creighton News 15 May 1930
