Mr. Wetzel died Thursday evening at Bel Air Nursing Home where he and his wife, Stella, had been residing since May 1974. Prior to that, they lived 53 years at 611 S. Eighth St. Mr. Wetzel was born March 17, 1884, in Norfolk to the late Ludwig and Paulina Schmidt Wetzel and began working for his father in his machine shop after completing the seventh grade. While there, he and his father sent away for blueprints and built the first motorboat (with a 3 HP gas engine) in Norfolk. Those were the days when Indians would come from all parts of this area, dragging their belongings on long poles, and camp each fall at the Reunion Grounds east of the present Elks Club. Mr. Wetzel had many colorful memories of the late 1800's and early 1900's here. His father, for instance, had the first local steamboat. It carried 30 passengers who enjoyed boating on the Northfork River. Wetzel was a friend of Joyce Hall and his two brothers, who left Norfolk to found Hallmark Cards in Kansas City, and of Hawthorne Daniel, a Norfolkan who moved to New York state and became a well known author. Daniel died in recent weeks. Mr. Wetzel's entry into the jewelry business came in 1905, after he had an appendectomy and couldn't do heavy work as required in the machine shop. He secured a job as an apprentice to a watch maker, C. S. Hayes, at a salary of $1 per week, and after three years with him, started a jewelry store with the late Clarence W. Scofield in 1908. Later he was in business with William Putters, after he and Walter E. Truex had a longtime partnership in the jewelry store until their retirement in recent years. The store continues the name of Wetzel and Truex, but is owned by a Sioux City jewelry company, Thorpe's. For several years prior to his retirement, Mr. Wetzel was the oldest active jeweler in Nebraska. Mr. Wetzel was a longtime member of First Congregational Church and had belonged to Norfolk Rotary Club since 1924. He was also a member of the IOOF Lodge and Encampment and the Elks Club. He is survived by his wife, the former Stella Mae Weatherholt, to whom he was married March 1, 1910, one son and one daughter, William of Chadron of Mrs. Charles (Betty) Berthold of Manteca, Calif., five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, one brother, and one sister, Louis Wetzel and Mrs. Emma Allen, both of Long Beach, Calif.
