PAUL LESLIE SLAYBAUGH Paul was born in Guthrie Center on February 15, 1921 to Paul Leslie Slaybaugh and Lola Myers Slavbaugh. He grew up on farm in Guthrie County, before moving to Coon Rapids when he was in high school. Early in the Depression, Paul lived for two years with has grandparents. George and Alice Slaybaugh, on their farm near Whiterock. He lamented it was one of the happiest times of his life. As an early teen, he did not go to school but worked with his grandfather on the farm. He graduated from Coon Rapids High School in 1941 and went to work for the Armour plant. Early in 1942, following the Pearl Harbor attack. Paul enlisted m the Coast Guard After basic training, his first assignment was to patrol the shores between Sea Islands, GA, and Hilton Head SC. His assignment yeas to watch tor German U-Boats, armed with binoculars and a submachine gun It was during this period that he developed a taste for sea turtle and enjoyed the hospitality of the Carnegie family at their home on Big Cumberland Island. In 1944, he was assigned to the frigate USS Bangor as a gunner Aboard the Bangor, Paul participated in a number of convoys to North Africa Following the German surrender m 1945, as forces were being transferred to the Pacific m preparation for the invasion of Japan, the Bangor sailed through the Panama Canal and up the West Coast. It was when the ship reached Seattle that the crew got word that Japan had surrendered, and the war was over. Paul was then reassigned to St. Louis, awaiting discharge But heavy flooding in the upper Ohio River caused a reassignment to Point Pleasant, WV, for relief work. His commander urged him to make a career in the Coast Guard, but he missed Iowa and wanted to make his life there Paul had long dreamed of having his own farm, but instead he used the G. I. Bill to learn the meat cutting trade. On November 27, 1947, he married Donna Jane Mozena at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Paul and Donna made their home in Carroll and Lake City for a time In 1950, they returned to Coon Rapids where he would be the meat cutter at Frohlich's SuperValu for the next 32 years. Paul enjoyed the camaraderie among the employees at the store, as well as the daily bantering with his customers. Paul retired in 1982 following open heart surgery. He was a proud member of the American Legion for more than 70 years and a member of the Christian Church in Coon Rapids, where he served as a deacon and elder. In his later years, Paul and Donna enjoyed traveling and socializing with friends and family. He cottoned to woodworking and completed a number of remodeling projects around the house. He also bought a rider lawn mower and a roto-tiller, using them in a small business. He developed a passion for feeding and observing birds, building Purple Martin houses for the back yard Paul and Donna both enjoyed raising flowers, vegetables and grapes in beds around their property. He and Donna also volunteered in a reading program at the elementary school, during their early years of retirement. Paul lived in his home in Coon Rapids until early 2016 when he moved into The Cedars Senior Living Facility in Madrid. He was predeceased by his parents, a brother, and Donna. He is survived by his children, Doug (Nancy Hayes), Colchester, VT; Tom (Pat), Ankeny; Randy (Lorane), Colorado Springs, CO; and Jane, Madrid, six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, special friends, Connie and Gary Strasser, Coon Rapids and thousands of memories. In life, Paul enjoyed hearing and telling jokes. He also enjoyed a prank. His didoes included stealing a bootlegger's moonshine and re-selling it when he was a boy, stuffing stock boys into garbage cans in an initiation ritual at Frohlich's as an adult, and teasing drag queens at Provincetown, MA, at age 80. For longer than anyone would have imagined, God indulged him.
