Wheeldon, age 79, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Friday, May 1st, 2009 at his home. Paul Melvin Wheeldon was born on June 28th, 1929 to Melvin and Marjorie (Darr) Wheeldon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He grew up in Sioux Falls where he attended school and graduated from Washington High School. In 1948 he joined the United States Air Force and served in the 175th Fighter Interceptor Squadron. After his service to his country he attended South Dakota State University earning a B.S. in Industrial Arts. He also received a secondary degree in drafting from the School of Design Drafting in Kansas City, Kansas. While in the Air Force, Paul had a motorcycle accident and was treated in Sioux Falls at Sioux Valley Hospital where he met a pretty young nurse who would become the love of his life. Paul and Doris (Johnson) were married on September 7th, 1952 and had five children. For most of his life Paul was a teacher and a draftsman at SDSU in the Agricultural Engineering department. After Doris's unexpected death in 1978, he retired from SDSU. He later owned and operated Wheeldon's Repair in Brookings, SD which his oldest son Daryl still runs to this day. Later in life, Paul became part of the United Way Foster Grandparent Program and helped children at Jefferson Elementary until the last days of his passing. Paul portrayed a gruff exterior that hid the sensitive loving soul he was. He loved family, and all children. He enjoyed motorcycles, woodworking and anything to do with flying. He had a deep appreciation of nature and loved camping, fishing and the outdoors. He was an Ecologist before the term was even commonly used. He would often find little sprouts of trees and save and nurture them. It was a symbol of his core value in life; help the ones who cannot help themselves, and lend a hand to the struggling, the poor and the unloved. Whether it be the homeliest puppy at the pound or the scraggliest Christmas tree on the lot, Paul was always the champion of the underdog. He was grand in his efforts but humble to those around him. His charity to others was hidden and unspoken. He had a mischievous sense of humor, an infectious laugh, and was quick to smile. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Eugene, and his wife Doris. Not a day went by in over 30 years that he did not mourn the loss of her. She was and always would be his dream come true. He is survived by his children, Elaine (Mike) White of Watertown, Daryl Wheeldon of Brookings, Diane Wheeldon (Wes) of Minneapolis, MN, Linda (Mike) Franke of Hayfield, MN, and Jim Wheeldon of Watertown; seven grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and a little dog named Oscar that misses him very much. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Sherbie58 # 48428325 provided burial plot information. 2-28-2018
