Read More	Paul Neidhardt Family New Salem 1883-1983 Book; Page 409 Paul Neidhardt was born four miles west of Hebron, N.D., in Stark County, to Henry and Martha Reetz Neidhardt, May 24, 1912. He spent his early life here until he left home to work as a farm and ranch hand. On Oct. 17, 1936, he was married to Ferne Nagel, daughter of Fred W. and Alice Schollaert Nagel of New Salem, N.D., at Wibaux, Mont. They met while Ferne was teaching a rural school near Hebron. The spring of 1937 found them farming a small farm east of Grassy Butte, N.D. While there, Ferne taught at the Little Red School, riding horseback 4 1/2 miles to the school because of heavy snow that winter and the poor roads in the spring. After two years, they moved to a farm six miles west of Hebron, where they lived for one year. In the fall of 1939, Sept. 1, their son Dale, was born. The next move, in the spring of 1940, was to a farm four miles west of New Salem. This incidently, had been the homestead of Francois Schollaert, Ferne's grandparents. They lived in the stone house that her grandparents had built on the homestead. This house is still standing. They moved in the fall of Oct. 1942, to a farm six miles south of New Salem. Their daughter, Faye, was born Oct. 20, 1942. In 1945 they bought land 2 1/2 miles east of New Salem and in the spring of 1946, they started construction on a house in New Salem. That fall they moved into their new home. In addition to operating a farm and feed lot east of New Salem, they opened the Sweet Shop in the basement of the Kuebker Bakery on east Main Street, in the spring of 1947. This was a teenage recreation parlor. Later that summer, they sold it to Mr. and Mrs. Melbourn Clendenen, who operated it for several years. Soon after, Paul started the Neidhardt Truckline, hauling livestock, etc., which he did until the spring of 1971, when he sold the business to Jim Kouch of Judson. During this time he also developed the Neidhardt Trailer Village in 1964, which they are still operating. That fall of 1964, in addition to his farming, trucking, and a livestock dealer, he was appointed part-time Fieldman for the State Land Commission. In 1965, Dale and Lila Neidhardt bought the farm land east of New Salem. Here they built a new house and Dale and his family are still living on the farm there. Dropping his livestock dealership, and no longer feeding cattle, Paul bought a tract of land in the southwest part of New Salem in the spring of 1976. This he developed into a new residential area and a mobile home tract. This is known as the Neidhardt Addition. He also took the contract to haul garbage for the city, which he did for the next four years. During this time he built and sold three new houses in the Neidhardt Addition. In 1977, they decided that they should have a smaller house and started building a new house next to their old home. April of 1978 found them in their new home. Donald Boehm bought the old house from them and lives there with his family. The Softball Association needed some land for their softball fields, so they sold them some land just east of town in the spring of 1982. This they have developed into two softball fields. Paul has been a past director of the Lions Club, is a member of the New Salem Volunteer Fire Department and has served as the President of the New Salem Fire Protection District since it was organized in 1972. They have been members of horse clubs, square dance clubs and belong to the Bad Lands Trail riders. They have been on four of the 100-mile trail rides through the Bad Lands. Ferne has been a director on the Farm Bureau Women's Committee of the Farm Bureau to which they belong. She has also been a member of the New Salem Homemakers Club for many years. They have been members of the United Presbyterian church for many years. Paul was elected to the city board in 1982 and represents Ward 3. In 1980 they bought a minihome and have gone on several trips with it, and plan to do more traveling now that they are semi-retired. Dale married Lila Hansen of Mandan, Dec. 17, 1960 and lives on their farm 2 1/2 miles east of New Salem. The two boys are James, born Dec. 3, 1966; and John, born Aug. 23, 1972. Lila passed away July 26, 1980. On March 14, 1981 he married Marilyn Moravec of Bismarck. She has three children, Tom, in the army; Tamara and Terry at home. Faye married William Sanders, April 27, 1974 at Aurora, Colo. and they live at Arvada, Colo. with their son William Paul, born May 7, 1979.
