His funeral service will be at 2:00 PM Saturday, December 31st at the American Lutheran Church with Rev. Steven Brandsrud officiating. Burial will be at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery with Military Rites by the Huron Veterans Council. Friends may call Friday afternoon and evening or Saturday morning at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Saturday afternoon. Paul Otto Mundt was born on November 29, 1921, to William and Phyllis (Paul) Mundt on the family farm near Maynard, Iowa. His early years were spent in Oelwein, IA with his family and he received his education in the Oelwein, IA area. As a teenager he would come to Huron and work at Armour and Company during the winter months. In July of 1942, Paul enlisted in the United States Navy. He received his training at Great Lakes Naval Air Training Center at Waukegan, IL. He was stationed at Naval Air Training Center, Pensacola, FL from September 1942 to January 1945; then transferred to the naval base in Jacksonville, FL until August 1945. He was an Aviation Machinists Mate 2nd Class when he was honorably discharged from the United States Navy in November 1945. On March 21, 1942, Paul married Beulah Olson at the American Lutheran Church in Huron. After Paul was honorably discharged they lived in Oelwein, IA where he was an automobile mechanic. In the summer of 1947 they moved to Huron where he was employed with the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad as a brakeman. He was later promoted to brakeman conductor and retired in 1981. He was superintendent of the Horticulture Building during the South Dakota State Fair from 1971 to 1987. He was a substitute teacher in the Horticulture Department and woodworking shop at the Huron High School for several years. He was a member of American Lutheran Church, Master Garden Club, life member of William Reaves American Legion Post #7, 40 et 8, Huron Senior Center, and the Moose Lodge. His hobbies include fishing in the summer and winter, hunting, gardening, woodworking, cards, bingo and trips to visit relatives. He is survived by his wife Beulah of Huron, three daughters, Pamela (Rick) Gorman of Sturgis, SD, Paula (Richard) Tresslar of New River, AZ and Becky (Kim) Eining of OFallon, MO; 5 grandchildren, Jeff (Sandy) Norris of Rapid City, Corey (Cherise) Norris of Sturgis, and Kimberly, Ashley and Colton Eining of OFallon, MO; 6 great grandchildren; 5 brothers, Bill, Ray, Verg, Larry and Berton Mundt; 2 sisters Margaret and Bernice. He was preceded in death by his parents, Phyllis and Jeff Large and Bill and Leona Mundt a granddaughter Tanya Norris, a son-in-law, Allen Norris a brother Dale and a sister Doris.
