Paul Robert son of Charles Randall and Hazel Bernice (Eppler) Smith, was born January 13, 1925 on a farm southwest of Cedar Rapids, Nebraska. Read More	Paul Robert Smith, formerly of Cedar Rapids, Nebraska, died Saturday, September 21, 2013 at San Leandro Hospital, San Leandro, California. Paul Robert son of Charles Randall and Hazel Bernice (Eppler) Smith, was born January 13, 1925 on a farm southwest of Cedar Rapids, Nebraska. Paul Robert attended country school at District 71 west of Cedar Rapids, Nebraska and graduated from Cedar Rapids (NE.) High School in 1942. On May 18, 1946 Paul Robert entered the United States Army. He served during the Army of Occupation in Japan, being one of the first troops in that part of Japan in 1947. He was honorably discharged on May 30, 1947. Following the service, he attended Simpson College at Indianola, Iowa, receiving a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology in 1956. On May 17, 1958 Paul Robert was united in marriage to Mary Lou Vawter at the First Methodist Church of Des Moines, Iowa. They made their home and farmed west of Cedar Rapids, Nebraska. Paul Robert became a member of the Cedar Rapids (NE.) United Methodist Church in 1948. He was a member of the Dan Cox American Legion Post # 44 & VFW, Farm Bureau, East District Council of Ministries, and the Boone County Historical Society. He served on the Cedar Rapids United Methodist Church Board, Cedar Valley Improvement Council, Masonic Lodge, Senior Center Board, the Gideons, taught Sunday School, Cub Scout leader, and served as a 4-H leader for 12 years. He also volunteered for the Albion Food Pantry and delivering Meals On Wheels. For several years he coordinated the Cedar Rapids Recycling Center. Paul Robert is survived by: wife, Mary Lou Smith of San Leandro, California; son, Randy Smith and wife Tupou of Union City, California; granddaughter Elizabeth Fakava of Union City, California; great-grandchild, Sean Fakava and a host of family and friends. Paul Robert was preceded in death by: parents and infant twin brother. Interment was in Sunset Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, Nebraska with Military Rites conducted by the Dan Cox American Legion Post #44 of Cedar Rapids, Nebraska.
