Paul was born Nov. 22, 1911 in Big Sandy. He graduated from Big Sandy High School in 1931 and went to California to work for Douglas Aircraft. In 1962 he started work with Coastal Dynamics, a dental supply company,and became the European representative. During this time he lived in Frankfurt and Kassel, Germany, where he met his wife, Renate Elizabeth Henkes. They were married in 1970 in Carson City, NV. He retired in 1976 spending his time between his family in Germany, his brothers and friends in Big Sandy, and friends in California. Paul enjoyed reading, all outdoor work, visiting friends and telling stories of the early days in Big Sandy. He was an avid historian and supported the Historical Society. He also wrote articles for The Mountaineer and left several oral histories on tape. He was buried May 16, 1994 at the family gravesite in Big Sandy. Paul is survived by his wife, Renate, and son, Julian Sonksen, of Kassel, Germany; and a son from a former marriage, Fred B. Sonksen of Utah; a sister, Anna Munsey of Walla Walla, WA; and a brother, Bernard Sonksen of Big Sandy. He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Anna Sonksen, and three brothers, Axel, Jens, and Pete.
