Paul was born in Wakulla County, the youngest child of John Cotton “J.C.” West, Sr. (1854-1936) and Mary Estelle Thorne West (1852-1931). They were a farming family originally from Kershaw County, South Carolina. J.C. and Mary arrived in Greenville, Florida during the heyday of lumber production. Paul was born in Wakulla County, the youngest child of John Cotton “J.C.” West, Sr. (1854-1936) and Mary Estelle Thorne West (1852-1931). They were a farming family originally from Kershaw County, South Carolina. J.C. and Mary arrived in Greenville, Florida during the heyday of lumber production. Like many others moving into the area, J.C. established a sawmill business. The couple quickly joined in the community’s civic life. They were involved with Greenville Baptist Church and J.C. was Sunday School superintendent in 1906 J.C. also dabbled in local politics. He signed a petition in 1907 to create a Greenville school tax district. The measure passed and J.C. was elected a trustee of the new school district. J.C. was also elected to Greenville’s first town council in 1907. In 1908 J.C. and his relatives established J.C. West Lumber Company with an investment of $7,500. According to the Enterprise-Recorder, he was “one of the prominent business men of Greenville” (3 Mar 1910). The Wests left Madison County and J.C. went into turpentine production. The 1930 census found him operating a turpentine still at Otter Creek in Levy County. He and Mary are buried in Rosemary Hill Cemetery, Bronson, Florida.
