Description	:	PAUL WESTENBARGER (son of Paul the immigrant) was born sometime between 1755 and about 1764 (census data). The 1800 census of Washington Co., Md., indicates Paul Westenbarger's family included 1 M (26-45) , 1 M (16-26) , 1 M (10-16) ,1 M (under 10), 2 F (26-45) , 1 F (10-15) , and 2 F (under 10) . Paul Westenbarger and his family have not been identified in an earlier census. The above Paul was identified as the son of Paul Westenbarger, the immigrant, in the latter's will (Washington Co., Md., Will Bk. A, pp 160-161), wherein he received one... Read More	PAUL WESTENBARGER (son of Paul the immigrant) was born sometime between 1755 and about 1764 (census data). The 1800 census of Washington Co., Md., indicates Paul Westenbarger's family included 1 M (26-45) , 1 M (16-26) , 1 M (10-16) ,1 M (under 10), 2 F (26-45) , 1 F (10-15) , and 2 F (under 10) . Paul Westenbarger and his family have not been identified in an earlier census. The above Paul was identified as the son of Paul Westenbarger, the immigrant, in the latter's will (Washington Co., Md., Will Bk. A, pp 160-161), wherein he received one third of his father's land. Paul Westenbarger, the son, is documented as selling this land (105 acres for 1200 pounds) to Jacob Sharer the 7 March 1801 (Washington Co. , Md., Deed Bk. N, p 354). His mother, Franny, waived her dower rights for 400 pounds, 7 March 1801 (Washington Co., Md. , Deed Bk. N, p 353). Four days later, 11 March 1801, an agreement was recorded (Washington Co.., Md., Deed Bk. N, p 362) wherein Paul Westenbarger and his wife Susanna "from causes best known to ourselves, have mutually agreed to part beds and separate during life, never more to claim each other as husband and wife, to prevent thereforward Paul or Susanna from taking or claiming hereafter anything of the other or of thereforward Susanna claiming any separate support from said Paul Westenbarger, by law it is mutually agreed between parties that thereforward Susanna is to recieve solely for her use out of the sale of Paul Westenbarger's land the sum of 200 pounds and relinquishing unto Jacob Sharer her right of dower". In addition, Paul Westenbarger gave Susanna her clothes, a cow, spinning wheel, feather bed and bedstead, pewter plates, etc. Soon after selling his land and parting with Susanna, Paul Westenbarger left Maryland for Fairfield Co., Ohio (about 1801). A John and Adam Westenbarger, brothers, settled in Greenfield Twp. Lancaster Co., Ohio in 1800 (History of Fairfield County, Ohio, Hervey Scott, p 180). These brothers are believed to be Paul Westenbarger's older sons. Paul Westenbarger died intestate in Fairfield Co., Ohio in Nov. 1805. John Westenbarger and Jacob Bealer, were appointed administrators of his estate (Fairfield Co.,Ohio, Will Bk.1, p 34) Paul Westenbarger's personal property was sold for 964. 5 pounds (Fairfield Co. , Ohio, Will Bk 1 , p 94). Paul Westenbarger left four minor children David, Mary, Sarah, and Elizabeth Westenbarger. In March 1806, Joseph Hunter and Henry Nagle were appointed guardians of Sarah and Elizabeth (Fairfield Co., Ohio Will Bk.1, p 65). One year later, March 1807, Joseph Hunter was appointed guardian of Mary Westenbarger (Fairfield Co., Ohio, Will Bk. 1, p 65). In January 1811, Samuel Shaeffer of Clearcreek Twp., Fairfield Co., Ohio, was appointed guardian of Elizabeth Westenbarger (Fairfield Co., Ohio, Will Bk. 1, p 215). It is interesting to note that in 1814, Samuel Shaeffer was to become Elizabeth Westenbarger's father-in-law (she married his son Jacob Gilbert Shaeffer). In most of the above mentioned guardianship papers for the children of Paul Westenbarger, the mother of the children is listed as Susanna Westenbarger. It appears Paul and Susanna had six children, John, Adam, David, Mary, Sarah, and Elizabeth. David, Mary, Sarah, and Elizabeth are documented through guardianship papers. John Westenbarger appeared in the Fairfield Co., Ohio censuses of 1820, 1830, and 1840. In 1812, David Westenbarger married Jane Vandermark (History of Fairfield Co., Ohio, Hervy Scott, p 246) , but he appears only in the 1830 Fairfield Co., Ohio Census. On the 30 Aug. 1814, Elizabeth Westenbarger married Jacob Gilbert Shaeffer (Marriages of Fairfield Co. , Ohio), the son of her guardian Samuel Shaeffer. At the time of her marriage Elizabeth Westenbarger was age 16. Jacob Gilbert and Elizabeth (Westenbarger) Shaeffer lived in Madison Twp, Fairfield Co., Ohio until their death, sometime after 1880. The writer has no additional, information on the other children. First shown in Ohio on Fairfield Co. tax list for 1808. They came from Hagerstown, Maryland about 1806 and located at Bremen, Ohio. Bremen is located in what is now Rush Creek Twp., Fairfield Co., Ohio.
