Pauline Gaikowski was born June 4, 1927, to Frank and Esther (Jutting) Gaikowski in Watertown. She attended school in Watertown and Webster. She graduated from Mount Marty High School in Yankton. She attended Presentation College in Aberdeen and graduated with a degree in nursing. She married Raymond Sass on Sept. 20, 1949. They lived on a farm south of Webster. She later returned to nursing and worked at Bethesda Nursing Home in Webster for 20 years. She also served as the director of nursing for two years. She was an active member of Christ the King Catholic Church in Webster and the Catholic Church Altar Society. She was also a member of the local chapter of Catholic Daughters of America, where she held numerous officer positions. She taught CCD religious classes for many years. She enjoyed painting farm and wilderness scenes. Survivors include her husband of Webster; nine sons, Jim (Janet) Sass of Annandale, Va., Jerry (Ricky) Sass of Big Fork, Mont., Ron (Judy) Sass of Florence, Mont., Allan (Pat) Sass of Webster, Russ (Darlene) Sass of Columbia, Gene (Teri) Sass of Milbank, Dwayne Sass of Webster, Greg (Nancy) Sass of Rapid City and Bob (Melinda) Sass of San Antonio; three daughters, Becky (Jack) Vander Poel of Jasper, Minn., Barb (John) Bauman of Maple Plain, Minn., and Mary (Jay) Aadland of Webster; her mother of Webster; three brothers, Don Gaikowski of Webster, Rich Gaikowski of San Francisco and Larry Gaikowski of Phoenix; three sisters, Marian Zollar and Therese Boik, both of Webster, and Lorraine Lesnar of Milbank; and 31 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father and one brother.
