The Kansas Highway Patrol said Pauline F. White, 40, Vermillion, was killed in a head-on collision at 3:40 p.m. on K-71, three miles east of K-63 near the Nebraska line in Nemaha County. Patrol Dispatcher Robert Shannon said White was in a car with her husband, Donald E. White, 48, but it was not known which of them was driving. Donald White was taken to St. Francis Hospital and Medical in Topeka, where he was listed in fair condition in the facility's intensive care unit. Shannon said the White car and a pickup truck driven by Byron E. Lear, 44, Bern, collided at the crest of a hill in blowing snow. He said Lear was treated and released from a Nemaha County hospital. Frankfort Index, Thursday, March 9, 1978, page 9: Pauline Fern White Pauline Fern White was born January 27, 1938, at Vermillion, Kansas and passed away February 20, 1978, in a two-vehicle collision on K-71 west of Bern, Kansas at the age of 40 years and 24 days. She leaves her husband, Don, and five children, Mrs. Patricia Fulkerson, Goff, Kansas; Daryl White, Mervin White, Joyce White and Marla White, all of Vermillion, Kansas; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Vern Ackerman, Vermillion, Kansas; a sister, Mrs. Fay Downie, Waterville, Kansas; two brothers, Delbert Ackerman, Frankfort, Kansas, and Leo Ackerman, Vermillion, Kansas; two granddaughters, Tanya and Pamela of Goff, Kansas. Also surviving are many aunts, uncles, cousins, a number of nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Two brothers, LaVern Dale and Eldon Lavon and one sister, Arleen Maxine, preceded her in death. Pauline or "Polly" as she was called by her family and friends, attended school in Vermillion. She was baptized in the Christian Church and was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, both at Vermillion. She was employed at Chicago Rawhide Industries Plant at Seneca, Kansas, and was married on June 25, 1956 to Donald Eugene White. She was (a) sweet, kind and loving mother and wife and will be greatly missed by her family, relatives and friends. Memorial services were held at the Vermillion Christian Church on Friday, February 24 with interment in the Vermillion cemetery.
