Mrs. Steffen was born Feb. 24, 1924, to Archie E. and Famie (Fiscus) Box near New Raymer. On April 5, 1948, she married Earl E. Steffen in Sterling. He died Sept. 20, 1999. Box Steffen, 78, of New Raymer died Sunday Dec. 29, 2002 at the Colorado Plains Medical Center in Fort Morgan. Mrs. Steffen was born Feb. 24, 1924, to Archie E. and Famie (Fiscus) Box near New Raymer. On April 5, 1948, she married Earl E. Steffen in Sterling. He died Sept. 20, 1999. Mrs. Steffen was raised in the New Raymer area and attended Glenada Country School and New Raymer School. She graduated as valedictorian of her class in 1942. Following graduation she lived and worked in Fort Morgan until she married her husband. She then returned to New Raymer, where they shared 51 years together. Mrs. Steffen worked as a relief clerk at the New Raymer post office for 20 years and as New Raymer town clerk for 19 years. She was a member of the Pawnee Hustlers Club for 40 years. In recent years, she enjoyed a monthly community potluck and monthly salad luncheon group. She was a dedicated supporter of New Raymer and the surrounding community, the Northeast Weld County Fair and the Alumni Association. She and her sister, Doris, managed the kitchen at the Northeast Weld County Fair for many years and she served on the Alumni Committee for the annual school reunions. Mrs. Steffen prided herself in being an area historian and she helped to compile three area history books. In 1988, she was co-chairwoman of the Raymer Centennial Celebration. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, crocheting and making and selling many beautiful quilts, dollies and other handcrafted items. Survivors are three daughters, Joyce Short and her husband, Dawayne, of Goodwell, Okla., Janet Lowe and her husband, Jim, of New Raymer, Judy Peterson and her husband, Rick, of Briggsdale; a son, Alvin Steffen and his wife, Sherry, of Dalhart, Texas; two sisters, Doris Vangraefschepe and Karen Jean Kester, and a brother Allen Box, all of New Raymer; seven grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Her parents, and a sister Louise Littlefield are deceased. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, at the Heer & Jolliffe Mortuary Chapel, 225 E. Platte Ave., Fort Morgan. Interment will be in the New Raymer Cemetery north of New Raymer.
