According to Pauline's wishes, there will be no funeral or visitation, however, a celebration of her wonderful life will be held at a later date. Arrangements by Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tom (Pop); her six siblings; and grandson, Michael Mehaffey. Pauline was born Sept. 2, 1912, in West Branch, Iowa, the daughter of Cleve and Maye Bell (Scott) Brown. She married Thomas Pendergast in 1930. They had been married for 51 years when he died in 1982. After his death, Pauline moved back to Cedar Rapids to live with her daughter. In 1992, she moved to the Asbury House independent living facility where she was the in-house manager and Saturday cook until she was 92. At that time she moved to Hallmark Care Center in Mount Vernon where she was very happy and thought of the staff as family. She lived there until the day before she died. Pauline's first job was as an Avon Lady. She worked at Penney's, a locker plant, and a school cafeteria, but most of her working life was at Collins Radio. Her favorite job was as nursery attendant at Asbury United Methodist Church for 16 years. She was known at Asbury as "the Queen of Hugs" and church members stood in line for a hug on Sunday mornings. Pauline loved crocheting and friends and family will treasure our crocheted "Maca slippers." She loved to play cards, especially with a group of friends affectionately known as the "Asbury Mafia" because they loved to play Pokeno for pennies. She also loved to read, reading two books a week for most of her life. But her biggest joy was her family. She loved playing with the grandchildren and always had time for them. When she turned 81, her doctor told her she had to quit playing basketball with the kids before she killed herself. She delighted in family gatherings where she made everyone's favorite foods. She was a wonderful cook and was especially known for her homemade bread, cinnamon rolls and root beer. Maca didn't think you should ever say or believe anything bad about anyone because you can't know their circumstances. That's the way she lived her life. We should all do half so well.
