Description	:	Peg Gliem was born March 3, 1915 on a farm just northwest of Dana, IA. She had two sisters, Arvilla who was 10 years older and Betty who was 10 years younger. She also had a brother named Howard. Peg and her siblings helped on the farm which had a little of everything. They had cows, pigs, sheep, ducks, chickens, geese, guineas and corn. Read More	Peg Gliem was born March 3, 1915 on a farm just northwest of Dana, IA. She had two sisters, Arvilla who was 10 years older and Betty who was 10 years younger. She also had a brother named Howard. Peg and her siblings helped on the farm which had a little of everything. They had cows, pigs, sheep, ducks, chickens, geese, guineas and corn. They had no electricity and the only running water they had was "run after it and fetch it." Peg started school the first year the school in Dana opened so she never attended country school like Arvilla and Howard did. When Peg was a little older she worked cleaning houses. A neighbor she cleaned house for set her up with her soon-to-be husband, Alvin. The neighbor invited Alvin over for some lemonade and cookies at the same time Peg was invited over. Neither Alvin nor Peg had any idea they were being set up. He was very bashful but managed to ask Peg out on a date. Alvin took Peg to Shuey's for an ice cream soda and a show in Jefferson on their first date. After their first date, Alvin told Peg he would never be able to call her Pauline which was her given name. He told her she would "always be his little Peg." She was always known as Peg after that. They were married March 28, 1937. Peg and Alvin always lived and farmed in the Paton/Dana area. They worked as a team. Peg could drive every piece of farm machinery they had, and Alvin helped with cooking and cleaning. Peg's first job was as a school cook in Dana. She started the hot lunch program there. Later she was approached by Bill Hannah, the owner of the Redwood Hotel, to come and cook for him. She did this for 6 years and retired when Bill did. She then was the cook at the Country Club for several years. Peg finished her working years at the G & M Grocery Store as their deli cook. Peg loved every person she fed and worked for. Peg was a member of the Rebekah Lodge, a board member of the Historical Society, Presbyterian Church at Paton for 25 years, Antique Car Club of Boone and, since moving to Jefferson, she became a member of the First Baptist Church. Peg and Alvin rode in their Model T in many parades. They were Mr. and Mrs. Santa Clause around the Dana community for 25 years. They left many wonderful memories to all the lives they touched. Peg's greatest love was her family and dear friends. She loved cooking up a meal for anyone who stopped to see her. In fact, she would insist you stay and eat with her. Peg was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Alvin, her sisters Arvilla Wolf and Betty Hillman; and her brother Howard Calvert. She will be greatly missed by her nieces, nephews and friends.
