By then there were already 4 small children. Pearl was physically strong, mentally alert, proud and stern. She was an attractive person who had style in her clothes. She was a great organizer and did community and church work as well as raise a large family. She played piano and sang nicely. Piano lessons were a gift to her own children as well as interested neighbor children. At bedtime she read scripture aloud to her family, and if the Quarterly from the Reorganized Latter-day Saints arrived in the mail she burned the midnight oil. Card playing and strong drink were enemies. Coffee and tea came into that category also. She accepted a state office in the W.CT.U. and really gave bootleggers some bad times. Education was also a battle cry. She wanted a good education for each of her eight living children and expected each boy to help someone who would like to learn to read. They often spent rainy days during harvest teaching some laborer recently from Norway, Finland or Lithuania how to write a few sentences in English. It pleased her to see how proud they were of this new skill. She made an effort to get acquainted with neighbors who were from different countries. She herself, was more often pregnant than not so most likely they talked about babies. She was also eager to tell the history of the Latter-day Saints Church. In mid-winter when it was impossible to get the doctor she presided as mid-wife as well at deaths and funerals. Her medicines were rendered goose fat taken both internally and externally. A woolen sock saturated in hot goose fat wrapped around the neck, soda water and vinegar, and liniment. With all her big family she seldom called the doctor except for child birth and in 1918 when someone had influenza. Pearl believed in good rich food for her active family. Bread was one of her specialties. Pie and cake were made with butter and cream from the large herd of cattle they tended. She taught the boys to be gentle to the animals but she always finished the stripping herself. "It was all cream," she said. When asked about the weather, she checked her curly hair. If her hair curled tightly she forecast rain. Loose curls foretold dry weather. Her garden was placed on the east slope of a gentle hill. She thought the morning sun was most beneficial. "The good clean earth was medicinal," she said as she walked barefoot with her hoe in early morning among the vegetables. Her cool rock cellar was a haven in storms as well as a cooler for milk, cream and butter. None of the family could lie to her. She always knew. One Saturday she planned to bake two applie pies. "Please don't eat any of these apples, Claude. I need every one for my pies." she said. Claude knew better but he ate one anyway. Next day at dinner he received a very small wedge of pie, but not a word was spoken about it. Everybody knew. In 1939, Pearl and Jim were preparing to celebrate their fiftieth wedding anniversary. Claude noticed that one side of her face seemed to droop. Immediately he took her to the doctor. The fee for the check up was $13.50 and she never let anyone forget that it was a waste of time and money. Her last child was born when she was 42 years old. Until she broke her hip at the age of 85 she never saw a doctor or took a pill. The last 2 years of her life she lived with her daughter, Jessie Beaty. Her mind was as alert as ever and she walked with the same quick stride and felt no pain. During the last three weeks of her life she requested that a light be left burning at night. When Jessie came into her room one morning, Pearl was lying asleep forever. Pearl Langton was many things but first of all she was a mother. Written by Claude
