She attended school in Pillsbury and Tower City, where she worked for room and board. Pearl Aslaug Sather was born on November 25, 1918 near Fortuna, ND to Christoffer and Olivia (Visdal) Sather. She attended Elkhorn Country School in Divide County and was confirmed at Fortuna in 1934. Her Family then moved to a farm northeast of Valley City, ND. She attended school in Pillsbury and Tower City, where she worked for room and board. Following high school, Pearl moved to Elmore, ND where she dressed poultry for ten cents per bird and also worked as a housekeeper. She enjoyed dancing to Lawrence Welk's band in the late 1930s in southern MN, and northern IA. Pearl returned to ND and married Daniel Gately on September 18, 1941. In 1958, she moved her family to Valley City, where she worked at the Sheyenne Care Center. In 1965 she married Luverne Smaaladen and moved to West Fargo, ND. She worked at Agassiz Nursery in Moorhead and as a nanny for a number of families until her retirement in 1993. Pearl enjoyed gardening, embroidery, playing dominos and especially traveling. A 1970 trip to Gudbrandsdalen, Norway to visit family whetted her appetite to travel. She made 19 more visits to Norway, as well as exploring the Holy Land, Europe, and Alaska. Family and her faith in God were also very important to her. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and Valley City Eagles Auxiliary. Pearl is survived by three children, Pat Beil, Valley City, ND, Douglas (Jaci) Gately, Buffalo, ND, and LaDonna (Jerry) Braseth, West Fargo; seven grandchildren, Scott, Rory (Dawn), Ryan (Tracy), and Brett (Jill) Beil, Jason (Melissa) Braseth, Melissa (Bob) Lehr, and Kelly (Erica) Gately; 14 great grandchildren; seven sisters-in-law, numerous nieces and nephews; her family in Norway; and special friends, Ben and Nick Shoemaker. She was preceded in death by her parents, her five brothers, and her son-in-law, Rodney Beil. Visitation: Thursday, September 13, 2012 from 6 to 7 PM with a prayer service at 7 PM at West Funeral Home, West Fargo, ND. Funeral: Friday at 1 PM at Faith Lutheran Church, West Fargo, ND with visitation one hour prior. Burial: Memory Gardens, near Valley City.
