Essman was born on April 11, 1923, to Fred and Lizzie (Lupkes) Essman in rural Ackley. She and her 3 sisters attended the Madison No. 9 country school. She was a member of the Washington Reformed Church of Ackley where she served as a Sunday School teacher and Bible school crafts coordinator. She worked on the family farm and especially enjoyed the horses. Later she worked 10 years at Shugar's Super Valu Foods, 18 years at Dodger Manufacturing in Eldora, and Bernice Coordes' Flowers for 1 1/2 years. Pearl delighted in nature: gardening, fishing, picnicking, and vacations at Clear Lake with extended family. Other hobbies included embroidery work, quilting, jig-saw puzzles, playing cards, and entertaining. Her retirement included trips to Arizona, Texas, Branson and a Florida cruise. Pearl always had a smile for everyone, she was unselfish, and she never passed up an opportunity for fun. She went to her heavenly home on Friday, May 1, 2009 at the age of 86. She was preceeded in death by her parents, 1 brother - Arend, 2 sisters - Gertrude Essman and Viola Kalkwarf, and 1 brother-in-law, John Maifeld. She is survived by 2 sisters, Edna Essman and Esther Maifeld - both of Ackley, a brother-in-law, John Kalkwarf of Aplington, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
