Hoovestol Morton Prairie Roots 1776-1976; Page 29 Peter Johan Halvorson Hoovestol was born the son of Gunvor (Barstad) and Johan Halvor at Spangereid Norway on August 16, 1864. His early life was a picturesque in that he was a born seaman. He became an expert at handling boats and at the age of 15 was a cook on one of the vessels that plied between foreign ports. He sailed for seven years visiting America, England, Ireland, Russia, Germany, France, China and other ports. Petrine Theodine Olson was born at Spangereid Norway the daughter of Reinart and Tonetta (Treland) Olson on June 11, 1864 and grew to womanhood in that community. Mr. and Mrs. Hoovestol were both baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at the same church where they were also married on February 27, 1884 by the Rev. Morton Kcheruff Junior. Mr. Hoovestol continued as a seaman for four years after their marriage. In 1888 they sailed for America with their two sons Harold and Thomas. They came to Chicago and later to Sims, North Dakota, where they lived for many years. Shortly after coming to Sims, Mr. Hoovestol became an American citizen and homesteaded 3 miles South of Sims in 1892. They operated a store in Sims for a few years and he also worked in the coal mines, farmed and raised cattle. In July 1912 the family went to Houston, Texas, later locating at Honea, Texas when they built and operated a store for two years returning to North Dakota in 1914 and settling at Sims where he operated a coal mine and threshing outfit for several years. In 1923 Mr. Hoovestol built his home in Almont where he operated a store for a short time and resided until the time of his death on February 28, 1943. Mrs. Hoovestol passed away November 26, 1941. They were buried from the Sims church in the Sims Cemetery where they had been active members since their arrival in 1888. Among his bequests Mr. Hoovestol left a sum of money to purchase a church flag and an American flag for the Sims Lutheran Church, which were presented by his sons Axel and Joe at a special dedication. There were 11 children in their family, namely: Harold, Thomas, Mrs. Jake (Johanna) Amdahl, Mrs. Bermart (Traisy) Kundel, Joseph, Tediman, Mrs. Martin (Velena) Olson, Axel, Randeen, Sophia and Adolph.
