She is survived by her son, Thomas and wife Lynn Darbie; her brother, Jim and wife Debbie Sloan; her grandchildren, Elizabeth and husband Karl Gunderson and Christopher Darbie; and her great-grandchildren, Oscar and Edward Gunderson. She is an alumnus of the University of Mary Washington, Fredericksburg. She began her career as a journalist at the Courier- News, a Gannett newspaper, in Bridgewater, N.J.
