Higgins, 71, of St. Paul died Sunday, March 11, 2007, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in St. Paul. The Rev. Ray Kosmicki will officiate. American Legion Auxiliary honors will be presented by the Carl Mogensen American Legion Auxiliary Unit 119. Burial will be in the Elmwood Cemetery at a later date. There will be no visitation. Mrs. Higgins has donated her body to the Nebraska Anatomical Board. Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Higgins was born Jan. 11, 1936, on a farm in Greeley County to Frank M. and Anna (Trela) Nealon. She was preceded in death by an infant son, John Michael Higgins. Survivors of the immediate family include her husband, Jack Higgins; three sons and daughters-in-law, Tim and Cheryl Higgins of Columbus, Shane and Darlene Higgins of Grand Island and Ed and Judi Higgins of Rochester, Minn.; two daughters, Peggy Splattstoesser of Grand Island and Dewan Glines of Ellsworth, Iowa; a brother and sister-in-law, Don and Leah Nealon of St. Libory; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Bette Welch of Santa Clara, Calif., and Mary and Bob Baker of Grand Island; and a brother-in-law, John Meister of Grand Island. Additional survivors include 19 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was raised in Greeley County and graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Greeley in 1953. Peggy was united in marriage to John (Jack) Higgins on Aug. 20, 1955, at O'Connor. The couple lived in Milford for two years, Grand Island for 34 years and then moved to St. Paul, where she lived for the rest of her life. She was a real estate broker and also did computer repair. Peggy enjoyed knitting, crocheting, playing cards, reading and computers. She was very active in volunteering and helping others. She was involved in 4-H, being a baseball coach, and was a licensed amateur radio operator with the call sign NØJFC. She served on the Lake of the Woods Homeowners Association, the Sonderup Foundation, Howard County Senior Center Board of Directors, Post Polio Society and served as March of Dimes Chairman. She also served on the Board of Directors for Goodwill Industries and in 1992 received the Chairman's Award for Goodwill's Center for Independent Living. Peggy was the coordinator for Prairie Foods at the Howard County Senior Center. Peggy was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and the Carl Mogensen American Legion Auxiliary Unit 119, both of St. Paul. She was also preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Janette Baker and Patricia Meister. Memorials are suggested to the Howard County Senior Center, American Diabetes Association, or the American Cancer Society.
