C, 18th Massachusetts Infantry Pelham was a 32-year-old Moulder born and raised in Carver, MA, when he enlisted at Carver on Sept. 17, 1861, being recruited by Capt. William S. McFarlin, and was mustered into the 18th Massachusetts Infantry on Jan. 14, 1862 as a Sergeant with Company C. Per regimental records he was 5 ft. 10 in. tall, with a light complexion, hazel eyes, and light hair. Recorded as "Present" on Company muster rolls from January 1862 through June 1862, he was discharged at Harrison's Landing, VA on July 12, 1862 due to disability caused by "Phthisis Pulmonitis" (Tuberculosis). He applied for an Invalid pension on Dec. 7, 1863 and was subsequently approved for benefits of $4.00 per month on June 24, 1882. The benefits were to date from July 13, 1862, with an increase to $8.00 per month effective Feb. 14, 1883 due to disabilities caused by disease of the lungs and rheumatism. Married in Middleboro on July 30, 1854, Priscilla Jane Shaw. Children: 1) Joseph Whitman, b. Nov. 15, 1855 2) Ellis Harvey, b. Apr. 26, 1859; d. in Carver, Oct. 18, 1859. 3) Pelham Anderson, b. Mar. 13, 1861. 4) Laura Louise, b. May 3, 1866. 5) Hannah Bartlett, b. Dec. 9, 1868; d. in Carver, Nov. 15, 1876. 6) Frank Ellis, b. June 14, 1871; m. in Carver, Oct. 4, 1893, Bernice Esther Cornish, b. in Carver, Jan. 3, 1872; dau. of Ellis Holmes Cornish and Nancy Lavina (Pratt) who were m. Jan. 1, 1868. No Issue. Source: Descendants of William Shurtleff Volume 1, Pages 600-601, #1837 PELHAM W. BARROWS, who died in Colorado in 1890, was a native of Carver, Plymouth County Mass. He was born on January 31, 1829, and was a son of Lothrop and Sally (Shaw) Barrows. His paternal grandparents were Andrew and Sarah (Perkins) Barrows. He was reared on a farm, but having no taste for agriculture decided to learn a trade. Accordingly, in early manhood, he went to work in an iron foundry, first in South Carver and then in Watertown, remaining at this occupation til the fall of 1861, when he enlisted in Company C, Eighteenth Massachusetts Infantry. He was eight months in the service, and in that time he suffered all the hardships of a soldier's life, taking part in the terrible seven days' retreat under McClellan. At the end of eight months on account of physical disability, he was discharged with the rank of Sergeant, and returned to Carver, where he lived for sometime on a farm. When partly recovered he resumed work in the iron foundry at Watertown. In 1877 he went to Albion, Boone County, Neb. locating on a homestead claim, and residing there seven or eight years. He then went to Colorado, where he had a son with whom he lived; and he journeyed subsequently to California. He was in poor health when he made this trip, and he soon returned to Colorado, hoping to be benefited by the pure dry air of that State; but disease had made such a deep inroads on his constitution that recovery was impossible, and he died in 1890. His remains were forwarded from Colorado, and were interred in the Central Cemetery of Carver. Mr. Barrows was a charter member of the Plymouth Grand Army of the Republic Post. He was an enterprising and ambitious man, and was a popular member of society; and his death, occurring as it did when he was removed so far from home and old friends, aroused universal interest and sympathy for his bereaved family. Mr. Barrows was married in 1854 to Miss Priscilla J. Shaw, who was born in Carver in 1832, a daughter of Captain Joseph and Hannah (Dunham) Shaw. Six children were the result of this union: Joseph W., Ellis H. (deceased), Pelham A., Laura L., Hannah B. (deceased), and Frank E. While Mr. Barrows was in the West his wife removed to the pleasant home where she now lives. She is a lady of ability, culture, and self-reliance, and has for some time been acting as Post-master's assistant at Carver.
