She grew up in Woodbine, Iowa, moving for a short period of time to Omaha, Nebraska, where she was baptized. Penny graduated from Woodbine High School. On August 5, 1995, Penny married Daryl Hulsebus at the United Methodist Church in Woodbine. Following their marriage, Daryl and Penny moved to Defiance, Iowa, where they raised four children, Tamara, Cheri, David, and JoHanna. Penny was a lover of Tupperware, she owned multiple sets and even gifted Tupperware to her kids for Christmas. She loved puzzles and playing cards. Penny always found a way to win at card games. She loved bowling, playing darts, pool, and going camping with Daryl at Yellow Smoke Park, taking their camper to the campground many weekends throughout the year. Penny enjoyed the outdoors, she was very good at fishing and always caught the first fish and the biggest fish. She loved to socialize, everyone she spoke with left a lasting impression on her, and always ended conversations with a hug. Penny usually had her family waiting on her when departing social gatherings because she loved to give hugs to people. For over 20 years, Penny worked at Eventide in Denison as a cook in the kitchen. The staff and residents were her second family. She always crocheted little gifts for Secret Santa at Eventide and the residents loved when she was cooking. She was always there as a listening ear and loving friend for the residents. On Thursday, January 31, 2019, Penny gained her wings, joining her father, Martin Baker, Sr. in Heaven. Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Daryl Hulsebus of Defiance, Iowa; children; Tamara Baker of Dunlap, Iowa; Cheri Baker of Council Bluffs, Iowa; David Hulsebus of Defiance, Iowa; and JoHanna Hulsebus of Defiance, Iowa; grandson, Jase Lueth of Dunlap, Iowa; mother, Sheila Baker of Dunlap, Iowa; brothers, Kenny Baker and his wife Leslie of Lebanon, Tennessee, Kevin Baker of Dunlap, Iowa, Mike Baker and his wife Sherri "Missy" of Woodbine, Iowa, Casey Baker of Dunlap, Iowa, and Martin Baker, Jr. of Dunlap, Iowa; sister-in-law, Marla Ahart and her husband Joe of Denison, Iowa; aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and many friends. The Iowa State Patrol says the accident occurred at around 5:08 a.m. on Highway 59. 52-year-old Penny Hulsebus, of Defiance, 48-year-old Maria Petra Garcia Hernandez and 42-year-old Ericka Leticia Dionicio, both of Denison, sustained fatal injuries. 50-year-old Herme Yaneth Guzman Hernandez, of Denison, was transported to the Crawford County Memorial Hospital by Ambulance and then to UNMC by Lifenet. 46-year-old Saul Armando Guzman Orellana, of Denison, was transported to the Crawford County Memorial Hospital by Ambulance and then to UNMC by Midwest Air. According to the report, Penny Hulsebus was driving a 1997 Ford Windstar northbound on Highway 59 and crossed the centerline where she struck, head-on, a southbound 2008 Nissan Rogue, driven by Saul Armando Guzman Orellana. CRAWFORD COUNTY - Three women are dead after a Thursday morning crash south of Denison. The women are Penny Hulsebus, 52, of Defiance; Maria Petra Garcia Hernandez, 48, of Denison; and Ericka Leticia Dionicio, 42, of Denison, according to the Iowa State Patrol. The crash occurred at 5:08 a.m., the State Patrol said. Injured in the accident were Herme Yaneth Guzman Hernandez, 50, of Denison; and Saul Armando Guzman Orellana, 46, of Denison. Guzman Hernandez was taken to Crawford County Memorial Hospital (CCMH) and then the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) by Lifenet. Guzman Orellana was taken to CCMH and then to UNMC by Midwest Air. Hulsebus, Garcia Hernandez and Dionicio were taken by Crawford County Ambulance to CCMH in Denison. The accident happened on Highway 59 south of Denison near the intersection with 270th Street. It is the last curve on Highway 59 heading south to Defiance. According to the State Patrol, Hulsebus was driving a 1997 Ford Windstar north on Highway 59 and Guzman Orellana was driving a 2008 Nissan Rogue south on Highway 59. Hulsebus's vehicle crossed the centerline and struck the Guzman Orellana vehicle head on. Garcia Hernandez and Dionicio were passengers in the rear seat of Guzman Orellana's vehicle. The accident is under investigation. The Iowa State Patrol, Crawford County Sheriff's Department, Crawford County Ambulance, Manilla Fire and Rescue, Denison Volunteer Fire Department and the Denison Police Department were all at the scene.
