Mr. Cox was born in the Shelmerdine community of Pitt County to the late Allen Jerome and Cornelia Oakley Cox. He attended the Greenville City Schools and left Greenville in 1937 to work in Washington, DC where he opened the business B and C Armature Company. In 1940 he married Janice Brown of New York City. Percy served in the US Army and was in the South Pacific Theater during World War II. He returned to Greenville in 1946 and opened his business, Cox Armature Works, which he owned and operated for 60 years. He served on the Greenville City Council for nine years, eight of them as Mayor Pro-Tem. During this time, Percy was chosen to be Council's representative on the Greenville Utilities Board. Later Percy was elected Mayor of Greenville by write-in vote and he served eight years as Mayor. At the formation of BB&T Company, Percy was one of the first four Advisory Board members and he served on this Board for over 32 years. He had been an active member of the Salvation Army Board for more than 38 years and was still in an emeritus capacity. Percy was one of the founders of the Center for Applied Technology at ECU and was Vice President of the Greenville Chapter of the Full Gospel Businessmen's Fellowship. Instrumental in the construction of the new sanctuary of the Salter Path United Methodist Church, Percy was lay leader for several years. He was a member of Unity Free Will Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Janice Brown Cox, a son, Samuel Ronny Cox, a daughter, Carole Marisa Cox and son-in-law, Robert Gregory McLaughlin, Jr. He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Charlotte Mills Cox; sons, Jack Cox and wife, Susan, Richard Cox, Craig Cox and wife, Valerie, all of Greenville; daughter, Cara Cox McLaughlin of Greenville; daughter-in-law, Margaret Cox of Greenville; step-son, Glenn Mills of Pine Knoll Shores, sister, Arleta Cox Wood of Greenville; grandchildren, Sammy Cox, Jr., Mark Cox, Holli Alcock, Jack Cox, Jr., Mike Cox, Jana Cox Salley, Marcy Cox Simmons, Craig Cox, II, Carlee Cox Meritt, Robert McLaughlin, III and Jay McLaughlin; and 16 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends at Wilkerson Funeral Home Friday from 6 - 8 pm.
