Within a year or so, Permelia had married a Horn. Elias Lafayette Horn was born and then came Newton Pickens Horn two years later. Permelia's husband died and a little later she married her husband's brother, James Horn. William and J. E. Horn were born by 1850, but there were a number of others born to this couple afterward. It was a large family and the ages varied, with the special gap coming between the first three and the later children. of the second brother, James Horn. The first three had an extraordinary devotion for each other and for their mother. There was no knowledge of animosity towards their step-father, though there could have been a difference in treatment. As they grew up and married, all leved nearby at times. Elias and Newton did more moving around, apparently for a better living. John W. DeVore settled and died in the community. Newton Pickens lived near Donalds SC - just a few miles away. However, he spent a few years in Piedmont, SC as did Elias. When the Civil War began, John DeVore, Elias Horn, and Newton Horn were old enough to serve, Newton being barely 16, Elias was 18 and John was 21 and already married to Amanda Ellenburg, with a child on the way. However, at the first call for volunteers, they signed up. Hoping to remain together, and wanting to sign up as brothers (full), Elias Lafayette and Newton Pickens changed their surnames to DeVore. This could be done legally at that time without formality. It was obvious, if they used the same name, it must be DeVore, since John, married, would have had his wife and coming child to consider. It did not work as they had wished. They were separated and more than two long years went by, while, for long times, one didn't know if another was alive. Then in 1864, somewhere in North Carolina, the companies of John and Elias were united in battle. The brothers found each other and had a happy reunion. Sadly, their battle lost, because both Elias and John W. were captured. They were paroled at Greensboro NC at the end of the war. John W. had eleven children by Amanda. She died and he married Fannie McManus and they had thirteen children."
