Perry Albert Hammarley was born at Council Bluffs, Ia., on June 14, 1878, the second oldest son of Isadore and Caroline Hammarley and one of five sons and two daughters born to that union. His parents came to the Creighton area in 1872 in a covered wagon, part of the Bruce Colony that founded Creighton. Their homestead was 2 and one-half miles south of town, known in later years as the Dufek place. When the grasshopper plague infested the area his parents moved back to Council Bluffs where he was born. Several years later the family returned to Nebraska and his father rode the pony express delivering mail from Norfolk to Niobrara. As a young man he moved with his parents to Atkinson where they were in the hotel and ranching business. He spent his early life farming. On April 22, 1901, he was married to Effie Elwood at O'Neill. One son, Wendell, was born to them. They moved back to Creighton, soon after their marriage where he was employed as a salesman for Wm. Green, a pioneer firm in farm implements and sewing machines. During World War I, he operated a restaurant here and later worked for the City of Creighton for many years. He was a territory salesman for National Refining Co. In later years he worked as a carpenter until his health failed. Most of the last few years he lived at the Creighton Rest Home. He was the last survivor of the original charter members of the Creighton Volunteer Fire Dept. He was preceded in death by his parents, who were buried at Creighton, his wife, who died Nov. 1, 1955; three brothers and two sisters, Joseph, Edward, Amos, Laura and Caroline. Surviving are a son, Wendell F. Hammarley of El Paso, Tex.; two grandchildren; and a brother Daniel I. Hammarley of Compton, Calif.
