Some time before 6:00 p.m. Thursday evening on January 5th, 1933; Peter Buster 'Buzz' Richmond (of Centerville, Iowa) and a friend W.J. Morrison (of Moulton, Iowa) left a Centerville speakeasy at the corner of South 18th Street in Centerville. After leaving the speakeasy, the two men made their way to a couple other drinking establishments in their car. Morrison stated during questioning that he couldn't remember Richmond ever having gotten out of the car. Several witnesses at these other establishments swore that they saw Richmond there, but that he was alone at the time of his visit. Some time around 7:30 p.m. Morrison and Richmond arrived at a lonely lane known as East Maple Street, which intersects with Highway No. 3 in Centerville. It is here that they met up with the assailant. An altercation occurred in which an unknown 'third man' made a single knife thrust into Richmond's heart. Morrison in a state of panic, apparently then fled into the nearby cemetery. Morrison's story of the events leading up to and after the attack are somewhat vague. It is assumed that Morrison was intoxicated, so his memory of the altercation is suspect. Morrison under questioning, continued to tell the same story repeatedly; and did not deviate from that story. Although Morrison told of a 'third man' being the murderer, he was subsequently detained by law enforcement and was held without bail for a lengthy period of time. Although held for a few weeks, he was eventually released and was never officially charged with the crime. Skimming through other newspaper accounts of the murder, leads me to believe that Richmond's killer was never apprehended; and was never proven to have existed. I will attempt to do further research into this incident so that I can come up with the official conclusion (if any) to the murder. The story above is based on the one newspaper article I read.
