Bernard, la., May 3.—By the sudden death of former Supervisor P. C. Maloy, which occurred at his home in Bernard at midday May 2nd, Dubuque county loses one of its most respected and highly esteemed citizens. Although Mr. Maloy had declined some the past year his death was a severe shock to family and friends, because of the fact that his condition had at no time been considered serious. Mr. Maloy was intimately connected with all affairs affecting the welfare and prosperity of the community. He was born in County Donegal, Ireland, in 1849, but came to this country when twelve years of age and located in Benton, Wis. He received his early education in the grammar schools of Benton and later completed the normal course at Galena high school. Here he laid the foundation for his life work and after leaving school continued to be a close student of political topics. Mr. Maloy moved to Iowa in 1879, settled in Prairie Creek township, Dubuque county, and aided in securing the Bellevue branch of the Milwaukee railroad. He established a general store at the site of the present town of Bernard and later was appointed postmaster which position he held for over twenty years. He was elected county supervisor in 1897, serving for six years, being chairman during his final year. Mr. Maloy also filled other positions of public trust, being a member of the school board at the time of his death. In June, 1886, he was married to Mary E. Ryan, of Cascade, Iowa, to which union nine children were born, one of whom, Miss Grace Maloy, former deputy county superintendent of schools, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife and the following children: Private Frank, with the army of occupation in Germany; Mrs. N. Carew, of Zwingle, Ia.; Henry E., deputy collector of internal revenue, Dubuque and Clarence J., Marcella, Annie and Nellie, at home. Mr. Maloy was a consistent member of the Catholic church. He was also a member of the Cascade, Ia., chapter of the Roman Catholic Mutual Protective association. The funeral was held Monday morning, May 5, at 9:30 from the residence to St. Patrick's church, Garryowen. Interment was made in the cemetery adjoining. Requiem HighMass was celebrated by Rev. Father Coffee, who also delivered a very impressive sermon. The pall bearers were R. E. Curoe Wm. Cannon, Michael Cannon, Alexander Moriarty, C. F. Smyth, Patrick Brady, Dennis Lynch and David Donovan. Cheryl Locher Moonen #47601076 provided the following information: "History of Bernard 1880-1980 - 100 Years of Progress" P. C. Maloy-Came to the United States with his parents when he was twelve years of age. After a short residence in Wisconsin, he came to Prairie Creek Township. He attended to German-English Normal School in Galena then returned to the farm. When the Bellevue and Cascade Railroad was built Mr. Maloy became the owner and operator of a grocery store in Bernard then set up a livestock shipping business. In November 1896 he was elected to the Board of Supervisors. He was married June 16, 1885 and was the father of five children.
