Born in Worcester, MA, Pete was the only child of Kenneth S. Howes and Lorraine Cunningham Howes, both deceased.Pete was very proud to be a 12th Generation Cape Codder. His early relatives arrived in the area which became Dennis, in 1639. Left behind is his beloved wife of 22 years June, and his four daughters: Gayle Harrold of Westborough, MA; Lynne Cokely and husband Doug of Bradford, MA; Karyn Rhodes and husband Tim of East Greenwich, RI; Dawne Howes of Charlotte, NC, and 16 grandchildren. He also leaves stepchildren Linda Marzolf and husband Jim of Rowlett, TX; Gregory Emerick of Rochester, NY; Stephan Emerick of Jensen Beach, FL and Jeanne Emerick of Naples, FL; five step grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren. Pete was pre-deceased by his first wife Diane Gerrior Howes. Pete was an engineering graduate of Tufts University with a Master's degree from Boston College. After graduation in 1957 from Tufts, he entered the Navy, and as a Lieutenant served aboard the USS Stickell. His photo of a missile re-entry was on the cover of Life magazine. He was a field service engineer and program manager at AVCO Corp., ran his own start-up company, spent 15+ years doing technical marketing at Litton's Itek Optical Systems Division, and concluded his career with more than a decade of technical marketing for BAE Systems. He was a guy who couldn't say "No" to another project, both at home and at work, and continued to support BAE well into his seventies. Pete was well known as a gardener, loved his children and grandchildren from both families with all his heart, and believed education is the key to their future. He enjoyed researching historical facts, wrote two books that were published, and prized his tenure as president of Dennis Historical Society, where he oversaw the restoration of the historic Dennis Manse. He loved traveling with June and taking thousands of photos, was a voracious reader, and if you had a problem, just ask Pete. He would drop everything to help find a solution. Lastly, music was at the core of his being, especially when singing with the Cape Cod Chorale and "We Are The Men" with Director Chris Roberts. Visiting hours will be on Sunday, March 19, 2017 from 2 to 5 p.m. at Doane, Beal & Ames, Rte.134, South Dennis. A funeral mass will be held Monday, March 20, 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Rte. 6A, Barnstable. Burial to follow at Swan Lake Cemetery, Depot St., Dennisport. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Dennis Historical Society and/or Dennis Memorial Library. (Published in Cape Cod Times 3/17/2017)
