Van Gorp Dies Suddenly The community was deeply shocked Saturday afternoon when they learned of the sudden death of P. F. Van Gorp, at his home three miles notheast of Altoona. After eating a hearty breakfast, Mr. Van Gorp went in the barn to curry the horses. While working at the barn he suddenly received a severe headache. The pain in his head became more intense and he was compelled to give up his work. He returned to the house for aid but nothing seemed to give him relief. Shortly afterward he became unconscious and remained in that condition until after the noon hour when he passed peacefully away. A physician who was summoned pronounced death due to a severe stroke of paralysis. Peter Van Gorp was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frans Van Gorp, who were among the early settlers in Marion county. They, like all the other Hollanders, came to America that they might be free from the oppression in the old world and that they might have their religious liberty as well. The religious training he received as a boy remained with him throughout all the years of his life. He was a devout Chistian and delighted in daily serving his master. Peter F. Van Gorp was born on a farm three miles east of Pella, Apil 30, 1860. Here he grew to manhood, spending his boyhood and young manhood days on the farm. On February 19, 1894, he was united in marriage to Dena Hoogenakker, to this union were born six children as follows: Mrs. Frances Knip, of Altoona; Ms. Ada Godron, of Des Moines; Mrs. Harriet Holt, of Des Moines; Mrs. Blanche Lekmkuhl, of Mitchellville and Clarence and Raymond Van Gorp, who are still at home. Other relatives besides the immediate family are one brother, Mathew Van Gorp, of New Sharon; Mrs. Jane De Jong, Mrs. Maggie De Witt, May and Anna Van Gorp of Pella. There are also ten grand children. It was in 1896 that Mr. Van Gorp in company with three of his brothers purchased the Burbank ranch five miles north of New Sharon. This remained their home for a long term of years. Later they lived on a farm northeast of Leighton and then for 13 years they lived on a farm one mile south of Mitchellville. Four years ago they moved to their present farm three and a half miles northeast of Altoona. Funeral services were held at the late home Monday afternoon at two o'clock in charge of John Boyt of Des Moines. Interment was made in the Altoona cemetery.
