FUN- ERAL HELD SUNDAY ------------ The reaper has gathered another sheaf. Last Thursday evening while doing chores about his place, Fred Wahlert, Sr., was suddenly stricken and soon passed away. Mr. Wahlert is one of the oldest and also one of the most respected citizens of Audubon county, he has won and held the esteem of everyone with whom he became acquainted. He was not a man who coveted popular- ity or political power, but preferred the quiet, unasuming life, taking honesty, kindness and square dealing with all mankind as his motto. This made him a good husband, father, neighbor and citizen. Mr. Fred Wahlert was born March 29th, 1849 in Germany where he was baptized and confirmed in the Luth- eran Church. He came to America in 1857 and settled at Moline, Illinois. After a brief residence there he moved to Henry county, Illinois. In February 1882 he came to Iowa and settled on a farm in Greeley township where he resided for fifteen years, after which he moved to Exira and since has made his home here. August 18th, 1886, he was united in marriage to Anna Palm. To this union ten children, six girls and four boys, were born, of which five died in childhood, three girls and two boys. Brother Wahlert joined the Ma- sonic lodge in Exira in 1900, he was initiated in May, passed in November and raised in December. Being a Mason was a very serious matter with him, he accepted the principals as something to be lived and not a mere form. He was a faithful and consistant member of the lodge and believer in the religion of his youth till he an- swered the final roll call on Thursday, April 2nd at 6 o'clock p. m. Fred Wahlert was the son of John Wahlert, and was one of a family of six boys and two girls of which two survive him, Edward of Adair, Iowa and Mrs. Catherine Hugman of Adair, Iowa. The deceased is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Carrie Schwenneker of Frederiksburg, Iowa; Mrs. Vena Schwenneker of Saskatchewan, Can- ada, and Mrs. Anna Tibben of Atlan- tic, Iowa; two sons, Fred Jr., and John, both on farms in Greeley town- ship, and a niece, Miss Laura Palm, who has made her home with them since childhood and cared for them most tenderly in their declining years, thirty-four grandchildren and thirty- one great grandchildren and a host of friends, Mrs. Wahlert having pre- ceeded him fours years ago last January. Funeral services were conducted from the Christian church by Rev. Robert N. Chord and the Masonic lodge Sunday, April 5th at 1:30 p. m. Interment in the Schwenneker ceme- tery. ∼Married in 1863.
