OBITUARY THE CHARITON LEADER Chariton, Iowa Thursday, June 1, 1916 Peter Gardner was born in Hamburg, Ontario, Canada on March 9, 1842, and died May 24, at the home of his son, Christian, in Russell. After the death of his mother, which occurred when he was quite young, he went to Henry county, Iowa where he made his home with his uncle. On April 5, 1866 he was united in marriage to Sarah Duttweiler. Eight children were born to this union, four sons and four daughters - Samuel J., Christian A., Mrs. Emma Calvin, Mrs. Anna Post, Mrs. Dora Moore, and Frank, all of Russell, Iowa, Mrs. Clara Hildenbrand, of Acton, West Canada, and Peter, of Washington. His wife preceded him to the better land, Dec. 12th, 1893. All of the children remain to mourn the departure of their father. In 1876, Mr. Gardner, with his family, came to Lucas county, were he resided until his death, which came as a sweet release after several months of patient suffering, during which time he was tenderly cared for by his children. Mr. Gardner was a member of the Mennonite church until (unreadable), when he, with his wife, transferred their membership to the United Brethren church at Wayne. His earnest, daily Christian life spoke louder than words. His trust was in his Savior, who he was ready to meet, together with the loved ones who had gone before. Mr. Gardner was highly honored and repected by all who knew him. He had acted a janitor of the Russell public school for a number of years until last fall when his health failed and he was compelled to give up the work. The public school was closed during the hour of the funeral and the entire school came in a body to view the remains of one they had learned to love and respect. Six of the high school boys acted as pallbearers by their own request. The funeral services were held at the home of his son, Christian, in Russell, conducted by his pastor, Rev. Geo. J. Cornford, and his remains were laid away to rest in the Allen cemetery, north of LaGrange.
