At the age of twenty years he left Europe for the United States and landed in St. Louis, Missouri. At the age of twenty years he left Europe for the United States and landed in St. Louis, Missouri. Ten years later in June 1878 he came to Seward and entered the general merchandise business with his brother, the late J. F. Goehner. In the following year, November 19, 1879, he was married to Miss Wilhelmine Vonder Ohe. This union was blessed with seven children, four daughters preceding the father in death in early childhood. When the departed came to Seward he transferred his church membership to St. John's Lutheran church, which had been organized the previous year, 1877. He was an active church member. For many years he was elected a member of the church council, serving as church elder, collector and treasurer for the pastor's salary, and the contributions for mission and benevolent purposes. Repeatedly when the Missouri Synod had selected Nebraska for a second normal school, the departed was one of the four members appointed by St. John's church as the "Seminary Committee," which was instrumental in bringing the college to Seward. He was an earnest supporter of the Christian Day school and until his end was interested in the welfare of Concordia Teachers College, serving Christian education. The loyalty to his God and Savior Jesus Christ made him a loyal citizen of his community, which he served to the best of his ability, whenever called upon, as member of the city council or otherwise. He was engaged in business as long as he was in Seward and has been respected for his honest and upright dealings. Since the first part of November last year the deceased was not able to leave his home and gradually became weaker. April 24, 1935, early in the morning, the soul left the body and a long useful well-spent life was ended at the age of 87 years, 1 month and 13 days. He was at home with his Lord and Savior, in whom he trusted unto his end. He leaves his bereaved widow, two sons, Henry and Edward, and one daughter, Miss Helen, besides many other relatives. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, after a short devotion at the home, in St. John's Lutheran church at 2 o'clock, April 28, 1935. Interment was made in Seward cemetery.
