Peter died seven weeks after he and Margaret were married. ******** Alton Democrat of Aug 15, 1903 Probably the saddest death that ever occurred in Alton was that of Peter Greeley Countryman who passed away at five o'clock Tuesday morning after seven weeks of wedded life. Pete, as he was familiarly known to his friends and that includes all who knew him, was born in Poland, New York twenty eight years ago. He was brought up in the school experience and had had a hard life. But it made a man of him broadminded in his opinions and staunch in his friendships. There was nothing little or mean in his make up. For ten years he worked about the logging and lumber camps of upper New York state and then seeing that he was not getting on in the world came west. Four years ago he arrived at Alton and entered the employ of F. M. Slagle, whose wife is his sister. For four years he labored faithfully as bookkeeper at the Slagle company's head office and was daily growing in the respect of the firm and in value to its business. He was just beginning to see over the obstacles which had made his previous life less happy than it might have been. Having wooed one of the most estimable young women of Alton and won her consent to be his bride, he embraced her religion and became a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. On the twenty-fourth day of June he led Miss Margaret Murphy to its altar and a host of friends saw them made one. The congratulations of the town were theirs and when, after a brief wedding tour, they settled down to housekeeping in the home he had labored so earnestly to provide, they had the best wishes of all who knew them. Little did any one think that in seven weeks the happy groom would be carried from before that same altar followed by his heart broken bride. But such is life. In the midst of it we are in death. No one knows the day or the hour. Few are as well prepared as our departed fried. It is hard to think of him as gone for he had but begun to live. His character was of that mold which makes men strong for the good. It seem wrong that he should have died at so early an age. He was sick but three days and no one is positive today what was his malady. He played ball Thursday of last week but played no harder than the other amateurs. Friday he complained of slight stiffness as did the others. Friday night he attended a picnic at the Pits home with his wife but came home earlier that she and went to bed complaining of not feeling well. The next day he was unable to arise and a doctor was called but gave no definite diagnosis of the case. Monday night a consultation of physicians was held. They gave no intimation of his approaching death but said they would know in twenty four hours what the malady was. Inside of twelve hours the patient was dead. He died quietly at about five o’clock with no one at his side. His wife was resting after hours at his bedside. The watchers had tried at night to soothe him into sleep but in vain. At near five o'clock they fixed him more comfortably and he said he would try to sleep. Twenty minutes later he was dead. His young wife was prostrated by the blow and her grief was pitiful to behold. The funeral was held at nine o'clock Thursday from the catholic church and it was one of the largest in the town's history. The deceased was popular with all classes and all places of business were closed. The sermon by Father Brune was as a father's eulogy over his son. A multitude forgot the distinctions of nationality and religion and wept with the stricken wife at his graveside. He was laid to rest amidst the flowers of St. Mary's and the bride of seven weeks was carried from the spot. The circumstances were so touching that many in that vast concourse were moved to kneel beside the graves of departed loved ones and offer up their prayers.
