Although always a strong and rugged man, the last year he was an invalid, suffering with the troubles incidental to his advanced age. His remains were taken to Clinton County for internment Saturday and were accompanied by his son John, Martin Barrett, his son-in-law and J. H. Purcell, his grandson. Deceased leaves three daughters, Mrs. P Purcell of Oquawka, Illinois, Mrs. James Gilmore [Rose], Lost Nation, Iowa, and Mrs. Martin Barrett [Mary], living near Dunlap. He also leaves three sons, John, near Charter Oak, Peter of Hale, Jones County, and Ed of Wheatland. He was born in Ireland, moving to America in 1841. His remains were interned at a cemetery at DeWitt by those of his wife, who died in 1868. (Dunlap Reporter, Dunlap, IA, September 19, 1889) —- Last Saturday Hon. Ed. Hart received a telegram from Charter Oak informing him of the death of his father, Peter Hart, which occurred on Friday at the advanced age of 85 years. The remains arrived there Sunday morning and were accompanied on their way to DeWitt by the family of Ed. Hart. At the DeWitt cemetery the remains were interred by the side of his wife who had preceded him to that unknown shore several years. The deceased suffered no sickness and simply lived out his allotted time and passed peacefully and painlessly to a better world. – Wheatland Gazette The deceased spoken of above was the father of Peter Hart, of Hale township. (Oxford Mirror, Oxford, IA, September 26, 1889) From the biography of Edward Hart, Sr.: Edward Hart, Sr., was born in Canada on October, 1846, the son of Peter and Mary (Dougherty) Hart, natives of Ireland who came to Canada in 1841, and removed to Clinton county, Iowa, in 1855. They settled on a farm of eighty acres in Liberty township, and lived on it for ten years, then moved to De Witt, where Mrs. Hart died in 1868, while Mr. Hart died in Crawford county, Iowa, in 1889. They were the parents of nine children, of whom two sons and two daughters are living. Strongly attached to the Catholic church, and a member of the Democratic party, Peter Hart was much respected as an honest, upright man and substantial citizen.
