Rohde, a resident of this section for 42 years, died at his home in Mapleton at5 4:45 o'clock last Thursday after an illness of five months. Mr. Rhode's (Rohde's) death came as a surprise to his many friends and relatives, although his health had been failing. He visited about town the day before his death and even on the morning of the day he died, he was about the house. Thursday noon Mr. Rohde's condition became critical. Hemorrhage of the lungs had developed, and the end followed quickly. Born in Germany. Mr. Rohde was born at Elmshorn, Germany, November 27, 1860. The father came to the United States in the spring of 1871. He was followed several months later by his wife and children, P. H., Claus and Mary. They landed in New York on November 27 of the year and went at once to Lyons, Ia., where Mr. Rohde followed his trade as shoemaker. P. H. Rohde worked on a farm at Lyons for several years, after which the whole family moved to Crawford county, engaging in agriculture. Two years later they moved to a farm five miles southeast of Mapleton. Retired 10 Years Ago Mr. Rohde was united in marriage to Elizabeth Ragis in Clinton county, Iowa, January 16, 1886. Making their home on a farm near Mapleton, they resided there until 10 years ago when they retired and took up their residence in Mapleton. Besides his widow, Mr. Rohde is survived by two brothers, Claus and Theodore, and eight children. The children are: Harry and Louisa, of Ricketts; Herman, Frank, John Arnold, Adolph and Mrs. Herman Marten, of Mapleton. One son, Gustav, preceded his father in death. Funeral services were held at St. Matthew's Lutheran church at 1:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon, with Rev. August Reuber officiating. Burial was in Mt. Hope cemetery. Mr. Rohde was known as a thrifty man and sterling neighbor, whose passing is mourned by all who knew him. The Mapleton Press, 25 Dec 1924; Page 1
