Farley, Ia., Nov. 12.---Special: While attending vesper services at St. Boniface Catholic church at New Vienna about 4 o'clock Sunday afternoon, Peter Roth suddenly fell forward in his pew and was dead before those sitting near him could gender assistance. The death created considerable excitement for a time and church services had to be dismissed. Death, it is supposed, was caused by heart failure. Mr. Roth was one of the most prominent and respected farmers of the community in which he lived. He was 59 years old and leaves ten children -- Charles of Dyersville, John of Dubuque, Mrs. Henry Grobstick of Dubuque, Mrs. Henry Osterhouse of Mitchell, S. D., Henry of Ackley, Renold and Dora, of Dyersville and Antonia, Atterian and Peter at home. +++ Clayton County Journal, Friday, November 16, 1906, pg. 5, col. 6 Peter Roth Dead. A special from Farley to the Times Journal says: "While attending vesper services at St. Boniface Catholic church at New Vienna about 4 o'clock Sunday afternoon, Peter Roth suddenly fell forward in his pew and was dead before those sitting near him could render assistance. The death created considerable excitement for a time and church services had to be dismissed. Death, it is supposed, was caused by heart failure. Mr. Roth was one of the most prominent and respected farmers of the community in which he lived. He was 59 years old and leaves ten children: Charles, of Dyersville; John, of Dubuque; Mrs. Henry Grobstick of Dubuque; Mrs. Henry Osterhouse, of Mitchell, S. D.; Henry, of Ackley; Renold and Dora, of Dyersville and Antonia, Atterian and Peter at home." Peter Roth was born in Kinsbach, Rhenish Bavaria, July 8, 1857 (sic/1847). He came to Guttenberg with his parents Mr. and Mrs. Franz Roth, who settled on a farm two miles west of town, where he grew to manhood and was married to Miss Rosa Harter, April 28, 1873. He learned the trade of wagon maker here with Jacob Kinzie and after residing several years at Alton, returned and conducted a wagon manufacturing business with Andrew Pink several years. In 1880 he moved to New Vienna where he has resided since. He was a delegate to the R. C. M. P. S. convention held here recently. Besides his children, deceased leaves three brothers and one sister: Theodore and Mrs. Paul Dorweiler, of Guttenberg; Jacob, of Carroll county, Joseph, of Grant county, Wis. The funeral took place at New Vienna Thursday morning at 10 o'clock. Those from here who attended the funeral are Messrs and Mesdames Ed and Frank Harter, Mrs. Lena Roth, Andrew Roth and Louis Frommelt. +++ Guttenberg Press, IA, Friday, November 16, 1906, pg. 1, col. 1 ROTH. Peter Roth, a former resident of Guttenberg, but several years ago removed to New Vienna, died suddenly about 4:00 last Sunday afternoon while attending vesper services in St. Boniface church at New Vienna. Death came without a moment's warning. He was seated in his pew at the time and suddenly fell forward expiring instantly, and before those who were seated near him realized what had occurred. Church services were suspended and his body removed to the family home. Mr. Roth was a native of Germany and was aged 59 years. He came to American when quite young and since then has resided almost continuously in Clayton and Dubuque counties. For several years while a resident of Guttenberg he was engaged with Andrew Pink in the manufacture of wagons, sleighs, etc., and after moving to New Vienna continued in the same occupation. Deceased is survived by ten children, besides three brothers, Theodore of Guttenberg, Jacob of Carroll and Joseph of Grant county, Wisconsin. The funeral was held at New Vienna Wednesday.
