Both of his parents families had migrated to Irwin from Westmoreland County, PA. Peter was the first son of John Peter Walter JR and Margaret Baker. About 1831, Peter's father moved the family to Medina County, Ohio where some of their Huffman and Walter relatives had gone. It was there that he met Mary Magdalena Miller, daughter of Jonas and Mary Clay Miller who had also come from Pennsylvania to Medina County, Ohio. Peter and Mary were married on 1 August 1844. Peter and Mary began their life together by moving to Stephenson County, Illinois where their first two children were born. In 1850 they were living in Clayton County, Iowa and by 1856, they had moved to Linton Township, Allamakee County, Iowa and lived beside Peter's younger brother Jackson Walter. Peter was killed in an accident with a run-away team on a hayrake at a farm near Pierson. Peter and Mary Walter became the parents of nine children, six of whom lived to maturity: Emeline m. Mathias Klees Nicholas Noah m. Mary Burnham Amanda m. Eardle Cassada Sarah Ann m. Cyrus Burnham Elvina m. Armintus Schofield Mary Ann m. Joseph Fuller *There was no 's' on the name Walter - it was added on by some members of the Walter lines as people seemed to want to anglecize it from it's proper German spelling. Some branches of our original immigrant ancestor, Jacob Walter 1732-1823, adapted their name to Walters.
