He Was in Good Spirits Yesterday and Went to Bed on the Company's Boat Seemingly Well This Morning He Was Found Dead in Bed This community was greatly shocked when it became known that Mr Peter Kelley had been found death this morning at 6 o'clock. Mr Kelley was division superintendent of the Chesapeake and Ohio canal, his territory extending to dam No 6, a distance of 50 miles. In fact he may be said to have been raised along the canal. He came here when quite a little boy, and as soon as he was old enough went to driving mules on that waterway. He was later made captain of a boat and boated several years between this city and Georgetown. He was next made section boss and after the Johnstown flood was made division superintendent which position he held up to the time of his death. Mr Kelley was on the streets here yesterday and those who talked with him state that they never saw him in better spirits. Repairs are being made to one of the culverts on the canal about five miles below this city and Mr. Kelley was superintending the work. He came up in town yesterday after some cement. He went to his home on the Oldtown road, got his dinner and left at three o clock, steering the mud scow that carried the cement to the place where it was needed. The company's boat is stationed at the aqueduct, four miles east of here. Mr. Kelley and the men who worked with him returned to the boat at 6 o'clock last evening, ate their supper, after which Mr. Kelley talked with the men in a jovial way until bed time, when he retired to his bed on the boat. It was his custom to rise at four o'clock in the morning and as he did not do so this morning, some one was sent to call him. when it was found that he had died during the night. He was lying upon his left side. He was subject to severe attacks of asthma and it is thought that he choked to death. As soon as it was learned that Mr. Kelley was dead the coroner went to the scene and viewed the remains, after which they were taken in charge by Undertaker Stein, who prepared the body for burial after which it was removed to the late home of the deceased. Mr Kelley would have been 68 years of age had he lived until the 14th of next month. He was known to almost every man, woman and child along the canal between this city and Georgetown. He was a Democrat and at one time was a great power in his district in Democratic politics. He was elected to the City Council on the Democratic ticket from the sixth ward, serving three terms in that body. He was a great friend of the late Senator A. P. Gorman and one of his most ardent supporters in the days when Mr. Gorman had to fight manfully to retain his supremacy. The deceased was also a member of the South Cumberland Volunteer Fire Co.. having been one of the organizers of that company. He was a man in every respect. Being of a genial disposition he made friends and being honest and upright he commanded the respect of all with whom he came in contact and by his death the community has lost a good citizen and the canal company a splendid employee. He knew every foot of the waterway and knew its needs. He was a life long member of St Patrick's church. He is survived by his wife and the following children: Edward of Woodward, Ga, Robert, James, John and William Kelley. Mrs Ellen Hillary, Mrs Kate Miller and Miss Lena Kelley, all of this city.
