Description	:	PETER L. RUNYAN was born at Catawba, Clark County, Ohio, on December 26, 1845. His parents were Hiram I. Runyan, born in Ohio, and Elizabeth, born in Virginia, both members of the Methodist church. His father, a farmer, died on November 13, 1897, and his mother died on August 24, 1852, just short of his 7th birthday. He then moved to Urbana,... Read More	PETER L. RUNYAN was born at Catawba, Clark County, Ohio, on December 26, 1845. His parents were Hiram I. Runyan, born in Ohio, and Elizabeth, born in Virginia, both members of the Methodist church. His father, a farmer, died on November 13, 1897, and his mother died on August 24, 1852, just short of his 7th birthday. Peter worked on the family farm from childhood and acquired a good common school education. When he was of age, he took over the farm on shares and ran it successfully until 1870. He then moved to Urbana, Ohio, and with his cousin J. W. Runyan engaged in the marble business, which however failed, causing a significant financial loss. Peter then located to Iowa in 1876, and found employment as a farm hand and a general store clerk. In 1878 he rented a tract of land, purchased a team, raised hogs and planted his crops, and after making arrangements for their care, he left for Montana. Going up the Missouri River, he arrived at Fort Benton in June of 1879. He found work shearing sheep and soon hired on with the larger firms as a sheep herder. In 1882 he went into business for himself east of Cascade, Montana, at Ming coulee, and improved a fine ranch that was sold to W. J. Bickett. In 1883 he wintered sheep for Mullery & Cannon, remaining in their employ until 1885, and in that same year he located his ranch ten miles south of Cascade. Mr. Runyan partnered with J. J. Ellis of Great Falls, Montana, and when the Indian lands north of the Marias River were opened for settlement in 1888, they pastured their bands near East Butte in the Sweet Grass Hills. Mr. Runyan sold his ranch interest there in 1892 to John Wasesha. By 1901, the Runyan ranch in the Chestnut Valley comprised 2,900 acres, another 22 sections of railroad land were leased, and all accommodated a band of over 10,000 head of sheep that produced 70,000 pounds of wool. No record could be found that would indicate that Mr. Runyan ever married. (As of November of 2019, no record could be found as to where Peter L. Runyan died or what was the date of his death.
