Lemen, dealer in fancy and staple groceries, of Williamsport, Md., was born in Berkeley County, W. Va., at Lemen's Ferry, on the Potomac river, December 14, 1840, son of Robert and Sarah E. (Light) Lemen, both deceased. Mr. Lemen's parents were natives of West Virginia, and members of old Virginia families. Thomas Lemen, the father of Robert Lemen, who was born in Berkeley County, was a farmer, as also was his son, Robert. The children of Robert and Sarah E. (Light) Lemen are: Peter L., Jacob F., a merchant of Hagerstown; T. J., a merchant of Williamsport, Md.; N. S. of Berkeley County, W. Va., a farmer on the old homestead; Eli W., a farmer in Western Kansas; Mary A. L., who married William B. Price, of Pottawatomie County, Kan.; Eliza Virginia, the widow of Charles Ardinger, Jr., who resides in Berkeley County and conducts Lemen's ferry, on the Potomac, opposite Williamsport. Mr. Robert Lemen adhered to the Old Line Whig party; he was a member of the M. P. Church. Peter L. Lemen was educated in the select schools of Williamsport. He was engaged in farming until the spring of 1861, when he enlisted in Company I, 1st Maryland Cavalry, for three years. He participated in the battles of Brandy Station, Va., Gettysburg, and many minor engagements. In 1864, he was detached for provost duty in Baltimore, was mustered out in September of that year, and immediately returned home. Mr. Lemen then entered Bryant & Stratton's Commercial College, of Baltimore, Md., and was graduated from Philadelphia in 1866. In 1867, he went back to his former home in Berkeley County, and for a short time was Deputy Clerk of the Circuit Courts. In June 1867 he established his grocery in Williamsport, which he has continued to the present time, being one of the oldest merchants of Washington County. Mr. Lemen is a Democrat, and has for many years been an active worker for his party. In 1891, he was elected Judge of the Orphans' Court of Washington County, for a term of four years. He has been a member of the Williamsport Town Council for three years. He is a member of the K. of P., Potomac Lodge No. 66 of Williamsport. Mr. Lemen possesses one of the original lottery tickets, used at the founding of Williamsport, for the distribution of lots. It bears date March 15 1787, with the original signature of Otto Holland Williams, the founder of Williamsport. These tickets sold for twenty pounds sterling; the one in Mr. Lemen's possession was drawn by his maternal great-grandfather, Peter Light, and entitled him to Lot No. 75, on Salisbury St. Peter L. Lemen was married, June 5, 1867, to Helen, daughter of Eli Stake, of Williamsport. Their children are: Bessie, who married William H. Beard, of Williamsport; and Nellie. Mrs. Helen Lemen died in 1874. On March 1, 1881, Mr. Lemen married Nancy A., daughter of Isaac and Mary (Snively) Motter, of Williamsport. They have three childen: Mary M.; Joseph Lewis; and Herman Light. Mr. Lemen is a member of Zion's Lutheran Church, of Williamsport. He has for many years been a member of the church council, and for twenty-six consecutive years, was church treasurer.
