Hanson Dies After Fall Down Shaft Hardware Company Employee Is Accident Victim Peter M. Hanson, 65, Holter Hardware employee for 16 years, died this morning at 12:25 in St. Peter's Hospital as a result of injuries Chief of Police Arthur C. Parsons said he suffered from falling down the elevator shaft at the store. Mr. Hanson, who worked last night arranging displays, was found lying in the bottom of the elevator pit at 10:45 o'clock by Otto J. Piersky, Holter wholesale department employee, who went into the store to see why the second-floor lights were burning, Parsons said. Another clerk, who was also working late, said when he went home at 10:15 o'clock Mr. Hanson was all right. Parsons said it appeared that Mr. Hanson, thinking the elevator, which was on the second floor, was on the first floor, opened the protecting gate by reaching through and tripping the catch and fell about 15 feet into the pit. The barred gate automatically locks when the elevator is not exactly even with the floor and can be opened only by tripping the lock, Parsons said. Officials said they believed Mr. Hanson, who had his coat and hat on, was going back to the second floor to turn off the lights when the accident occurred. When found he was immediately taken to St. Peter's Hospital by the Opp and Conrad ambulance and was attended by Dr. William F. Cashmore. Mr. Hanson was born Aug. 1, 1879, in Oslo, Norway. He came to America as a young man, settling in Glyndon, Minn. In 1907 he married Matilda Wicker at Glyndon. The Hansons moved to Montana 22 years ago, settling in Whitehall, where Mr. Hanson operated a store for several years. In 1922 they came to Helena and Mr. Hanson worked for Holters for a short time, then moved to Butte where he opened his own grocery store. In February, 1929, Mr. Hanson returned here and since has been employed at Holters as window decorator and display arranger. He was well liked and highly respected by all Helena businessmen and residents who knew him. Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Hanson, 934 Eighth with whom he resided, and two grandchildren, Eddie and Alice Hanson. The body is at Opp and Conrad Funeral Home. Arrangements are pending.
