In 1904 Mr. Mellett suffered a stroke of paralysis which left his right limbs partially paralyzed, but with his wonderful vitality he had never given up his work a dertermination and had commenced the new year's work with a determination and hope to surpass all previous efforts on the plantation where he spent the best part of his life. At the age of 19 while a student at the Citadel he enlisted in the Cadet Rangers, a company recruited from the student body, and served faithfully for the cause of the Confederacy until he was captured in a skirmish at Behicit Creek, Johns Island, in February 1864. He was taken to Fort Delman, where he was confined for the last 16 months of the war. He reached home in June, 1865, and quietly settled down to farming. On Dec. 8, 1870, he was married to Miss Eunice Mason Cain, daughter of the late Maj. Richard Cain of Privateer, who survives him, also the following children: Mrs. E. W. Nettles of Sumter; Alva Mellett of this place and Miss Nan Mellett and Master Frank Mellett, the former a teacher at the S. C. C. I. and the latter a student. Mr. Mellett wa the son of the late Col. Frank Mellett and was in the 65th year of his age. In 1870 he was employed by the late Mr. Jas. H. Aycock as manager of his Wedgefield farm, which position he held continuously since, and the reputation he attained as an expert farmer is too well known to mention here. Mr. Mellett was one of the few left who organized the Baptist church here in 1881 and has been a deacon and Sunday school superintendent continuously since. He was a Christian who loved his religion every day, and his example and influence for good will be greatly missed in the community. His many acts of charity which were dispensed in a quiet unostentatious manner will be long remembered by those both white and black who were the recipients of his bounty. A loving husband and father, a faithful friend, companionable in all the social relations of life and away above the average in intellectual attainments, his familiar face and figure will be sadly missed in his home town. --The State, April 17, 1908
