Peter Monfore, fourth child of Garret Monfore and Sally Griswold, was born at Sidney Plains, Delaware County, New York, on Feb. 13, 1820. He was married to Diana A Howland on Nov. 17 (18), 1847. Diana Howland was born at Center Lisle, Broome County, New York, on May 26, 1830, the eldest in a family of nine children. When she was 16, an epidemic of cholera in New York state took her mother and her eight brothers, leaving only the father and daughter. The Peter Monfore family lived in Center Lisle until 1865, where he had learned the miller's trade. On April 10, 1865, they started for Putnam County, Illinois, to establish a new home. The family then consisted of the parents, Peter and Diana, and five children, namely, Emerson age 17; Elmer 12; Cora 7; Alice 5; Delana 2. A baby girl, also named Alice, had died in 1854 at the age of three. (Note:- Elmer recalled that, as a boy on the train trip to the west, the children were much thrilled by bands playing and flags flying at cities and towns through which they passed. The younger ones did not realize that the nation was rejoicing over the ending of the Civil War. Gen. Robert E. Lee had surrendered to Gen. U. S. Grant at Appomattox on April 9, (1865). (Note:- Peter's younger half-brother, Edward John, had moved with his family to Iowa from New York state the year before, in 1864. Why did Peter decide to take his family to Putnam County, Illinois? It would be interesting to find the answer to that question. That was the county to which his older brother, Whiting Griswold Monfort, had gone as a young doctor in 1836 or 1837 to practice, and where the had died on Aug. 13, 1838.) In Putnam County Peter rented a farm near the little village of Putnam. The children attended the Sparling district school, of which Miss Anna Bagley was the teacher. (Note:- She later married James C. Hutton, a Civil War veteran, who came there after the close of the war and worked for Peter. A number of years later the Huttons moved to Springfield, S.D.) In the spring of 1866 the Peter Monfore family moved to another farm some two miles away, and remained on it for two years. Then, in the spring fo 1868, they moved to Warren County, Iowa, where Peter bought a farm. In the summer of 1871 the two oldest boys, Emerson and Elmer, went to Bon Homme Co., Dakota Territory, where Emerson filed on homesteads for himself and his father, about four miles north of Springfield. They then returned to Iowa, and the next spring (1872) the family moved to Dakota. They farmed there for about five years, then moved into town. Peter Monfore died June 19, 1894, his wife, Diana, on Aug. 31, 1906. Both are buried at Springfield, S.D. They had eight children:- 1. Emerson John (1848-1912). 2. Alice A. (1851-1854). 3. Elmer Whiting (1853-1925). 4. Cora A. (1858-1934). 5. Alice A. (1861-1936). 6. Delana H. (1863-1922). 7. Orluna B. (1866-1911). 8.
